At a remote industrial facility in Alberta, food waste was being hauled away while sawdust was being purchased for an operational process.

Eco-Growth helped close that loop.

Beginning in 2018, Eco-Growth worked with the onsite operations team to process food waste and other organic material using an Eco-Growth Organic Reactor.

By 2020, the reported results included:
• 235,197 kg of food waste diverted from landfill
• A 70–80% reduction in solid food waste
• Approximately $4,957 in monthly savings
• 385 kg of raw waste converted into 77 kg of biomass every 24 hours

The dried biomass was then reused onsite as an alternative to sawdust.
Less waste hauled. Fewer landfill trips. Lower costs. A discarded material turned into something useful.

The project earned Eco-Growth a 2020 Alberta Emerald Award and remains a powerful example of what practical circular innovation can achieve.

Waste has a hierarchy.

The Government of Canada’s waste hierarchy prioritizes prevention and reduction, followed by reuse, repair, remanufacturing, recycling, energy recovery, and finally landfill disposal.

That order matters.

Landfill should be the last option, not the default destination for materials that may still hold value.

When organic waste cannot be prevented, reused, or recycled, energy recovery can provide a practical alternative. Eco-Growth helps organizations process organic waste closer to where it is generated and transform it into dry, odour-free biomass feedstock for thermal energy generation.

This approach can reduce waste volume, limit reliance on landfill disposal, and support more circular operations.

A fire at the Summerland landfill has added further air quality and environmental concerns as crews continue responding to the Bald Range wildfire in British Columbia.

Local officials confirmed that fire crews have been working at the landfill while the broader wildfire remains active. Smoke from the materials burning at the site has created additional concerns for Summerland and surrounding communities already experiencing difficult conditions.

This is first and foremost a public safety emergency. Our thoughts are with the residents who have been displaced and the emergency personnel working to protect affected communities.

The incident is also a reminder that the impacts of a landfill can extend beyond its physical boundaries. Reducing the amount of material sent to landfills through source separation, recycling, organic waste diversion, and local resource recovery can help communities build more resilient waste systems.

At Eco-Growth, we help organizations divert organic materials from landfill and convert them into useful resources. While no single waste solution could prevent an event like this, reducing long-term landfill dependence remains an important part of building safer and more sustainable communities.

One year ago, Eco-Growth had the opportunity to support the 2025 G7 Summit in Kananaskis.

Behind the scenes of one of the world’s most important international gatherings, our team helped address a practical sustainability challenge: food waste.

Using Eco-Growth’s circular waste-to-energy approach, organic waste from the summit was diverted, processed, and transformed into a productive resource.

Food waste became fuel.
Fuel became energy.
Waste became impact.

One year later, we remain proud to have demonstrated what Canadian-made clean technology can look like in action.

The Unseen Consequences of Organic Waste Disposal. In this presentation, Tatenda Mambo of the University of Calgary's Sustainability Studies program examines the ecological implications of organic waste in landfills, which contribute to methane emissions and the depletion of valuable natural resources. Eco-Growth is working to break this cycle by supporting pragmatic waste-to-resource solutions that mitigate methane's impact and extract value from materials originating from natural sources.
