Picture this: an AGM battery sitting in a hot engine bay or a sealed storage compartment all summer. It still starts the vehicle fine in September. But by next spring, it's noticeably weaker, and heat is usually the reason why.
π What's actually happening inside the battery
AGM batteries rely on a fibreglass mat that holds the electrolyte in place against the lead plates, a design that reduces internal resistance and supports fast recharging. But that same sealed, compact construction means there's nowhere for excess heat to go.
Elevated temperatures speed up the chemical reactions happening inside every cell. That accelerates plate corrosion, gradually reducing capacity and shortening the battery's usable life, even if nothing looks wrong on the outside.
Heat also throws off the battery's self-discharge rate. A healthy AGM battery normally loses only about 1β3% of its charge per month, but that can climb to two or three times that rate in sustained heat.

Keeping AGM batteries out of the danger zone
AGM batteries perform best between roughly 20β25Β°C, and while they can tolerate a wider range, sustained heat above that steadily shortens their working life. A few things help:
β’ Temperature-compensated charging whenever possible
β’ Shaded, ventilated installation, away from direct sun and sealed heat traps
β’ A short cool-down period before recharging after heavy use in hot weather
β’ Extra attention to batteries in long-term storage during warm months
Cold gets more attention because it causes immediate, visible performance drops. Heat is quieter, but over time, it's the more damaging of the two.
