When comparing battery performance, most discussions focus on energy density.

What often gets overlooked is how long a battery lasts, how it is tested, and what cell format is used.

Based on publicly disclosed data, our NMC811 lithium-metal pouch cell operates in a range that combines both high demonstrated cycle life (~1,600 cycles) and high cell-level energy density under stated test conditions.

Continuing long term materials development at our Guelph processing facility.

This approximately 15 ton stockpile of graphitic rock has been staged onsite for over a year and supports ongoing validation work and material supply to customers. The material averages about 7.5% carbon, with localized areas reaching up to 13%, and is hosted in marble.

Using our patented dry air classification process, calcium carbonate is separated without water or chemicals. This enables repeatable, environmentally responsible testing toward graphene and other advanced carbon materials.

A closer look at what real large flake graphite looks like.

These are microscope images of premium large flake graphite processed using our patented dry air separation technology. No water. No chemicals. No crushing. The natural flake structure is preserved.

Maintaining flake integrity is critical for converting graphite into high quality graphene for advanced materials and battery applications. It is a small detail that makes a big difference downstream.

Expandable graphite starts as natural graphite flake. What happens next is what makes it special.

With intercalation and controlled heat, the flake expands into a worm like structure filled with tiny sealed chambers. These expanded structures can be pressed into flexible graphite foil used for heat management, fire protection, and battery safety. They can also act as scaffolding for advanced battery anodes.

The same high-quality flake can also be used to make graphene, where crystal structure and layer integrity matter.

Expandable graphite and graphite foil are already used in fire barriers, electronics, batteries, and high-temperature industrial applications. Canada has the graphite. Building more of this processing capability at home could strengthen North America’s advanced materials and energy supply chains.

We ran a simple heat exposure demo on an epoxy panel loaded with expandable graphite.
A blowtorch was used to mimic the kind of rapid thermal input you can see during lithium ion battery thermal runaway events. The flame stayed on the same spot for over 40 seconds which is far longer than most flame exposure tests.

If you have ever heard the saying “now we are cooking with gas,” this is the materials science version.

Instead of burning through, the expandable graphite separates and grows into a thick carbon layer that helps block heat. It is a well known behavior in carbon materials but still fascinating to watch up close.

Materials like this are being studied for demanding environments in defense, aviation, automotive, and residential applications where strong fire and thermal blocking performance can be crucial to safety.

In this video a magnet moves beneath a tray of our large flake graphite.
Watch how the flakes respond.
They lift.
They stand upright.
They pivot and follow the magnetic field as if the material is alive.

This is the hidden physics of SP2 carbon.

Graphite is diamagnetic. Its electron structure creates a small repelling force when exposed to a magnetic field.
The basal plane repels the field more than the edges, so when the strongest part of the magnetic field passes underneath the flakes rotate to reduce magnetic energy. This is why they lift and align in real time.

A simple demonstration, but one that reveals how structure matters in advanced materials and next generation energy systems.
