First one: what actually happens to stucco and parging over a Calgary winter?
Mostly, nothing dramatic — if it was in good shape going into the cold. Sound stucco and parging handle freezing temperatures fine on their own. The problems come from existing damage, not the cold itself.
Here's the mechanism: any crack or gap that's already there becomes a pathway. Snow melts against the wall on a warmer day, water gets into that gap, then it freezes again overnight. That cycle repeats all winter, and each freeze can widen the damage a little more.
So the real question isn't "will winter hurt my stucco" — it's "did anything already have a way in before winter started." If yes, that's worth knowing about now, even if the actual repair has to wait until spring.
