For decades, the standard skeleton of a residential staircase was framed out using dimensional lumber, plywood, and a framing nailer. It was fast, familiar, and hidden away behind layers of drywall.

​Today, the most forward-thinking architects and custom builders across Calgary are ditching the framing lumber altogether and opting for structural steel sub-structures—even when the final design is meant to look warm and traditional.

​Moving the structural backbone from wood to engineered steel solves three critical challenges unique to our local market:
​Eliminating the "Alberta Creak": Our extreme swings in relative humidity—from dry winter heating seasons to humid summer storms—cause wood framing to expand and contract. This shifting loosens fasteners, leading to annoying staircase squeaks and creaks. Steel remains completely unaffected by atmospheric moisture, guaranteeing a permanently silent structure.

​Achieving True Deflection Control: Long-span, floating, or helical stair designs are prone to "bouncing" under foot traffic if framed in wood. A heavy-gauge steel mono-stringer or dual-plate system offers immense rigidity, dropping deflection down to zero and giving the stairs an incredibly premium, solid feel.
