Project Spotlight: University of Calgary McKimmie Tower (Completed 2022)
As we continue to grow our commercial solar portfolio, we're looking back at one of the most technically challenging projects our team has completed.
Installed atop the University of Calgary's iconic McKimmie Tower, this 128 kW commercial solar system required far more than a standard rooftop installation.
Working at significant heights meant every day started with detailed safety planning. The building's elevation required precise structural engineering to withstand high wind loads, while custom-fabricated mounting solutions were developed for both the central and curved perimeter solar arrays. To complete the installation, our team also had to safely route large electrical conductors through the building's elevator shaft while meeting strict code requirements.
The finished system includes:
☀️ 376 Hanwha 340W solar modules
☀️ 128 kW DC / 103 kW AC system size
☀️ Approximately 140,000 kWh of annual clean energy production
☀️ Estimated $17,000 in first-year electricity savings
☀️ Projected $870,000 in electricity savings over 25 years
One of the biggest lessons from this project? Complex commercial solar installations demand more than quality equipment—they require careful planning, strong partnerships, and the ability to adapt when unexpected challenges arise.
A big thank you to the University of Calgary and Stuart Olson for the opportunity to be part of this landmark project.
