Most people never see what proper vermiculite removal actually looks like.

It is not a shop vac, some bags and a hope for the best. It starts before anyone enters the attic with formal notice, real insurance and independent lab results, and it ends with negative air containment, industrial HEPA, third party air testing and a paper trail that will stand up years from now when you sell or renovate.

Every shortcut someone takes with your vermiculite becomes your problem to live with.

Shop vacs, garbage bags at the curb, ‘it is just insulation’ and rushed jobs all move fibres into the air, the HVAC system, the neighbourhood and onto your legal record instead of out of your life. Proper abatement is slower and less glamorous, but it is the only way you get to walk back into your home and actually know it is safe again.

Here’s what you don’t see: building proper containment, gearing up, slow careful removal, bagging and labeling, hauling to an approved landfill, and air testing before we call it clean. A lot of reports come back with a line that says ‘below 1% asbestos’ and people assume that means it’s safe to shovel out the vermiculite themselves.

It doesn’t.

That 1% is just where the basic test stops being able to see fibres, not a magic safety number, and once you stir that material up you can’t put the dust back in the bag. If you’re seeing any asbestos at all on the report, that’s the point where a proper abatement crew, containment, and air testing step in so you’re not gambling with your lungs or your house for the sake of a weekend project.
