The season is finally wrapped up. I did not realize this but I have not wrote an article for just over a month. I guess I have not had much to write about. Everyone likes how real I write these blogs, and I am not sure it gets much more real than this.
Everyone probably goes through this in their career but I pretty much gave the CFR and the Maple leaf finals away. I did not place for a month. I can’t really say I did not rope bad either. I roped well and my confidence is there but I did not make a smooth run and all I really needed was one good run. When I summarize the year. In the team roping I am working on myself to be better at reaching and that came with me missing more than normal. Rhet roped well behind me and I can see his confidence growing. In the calf roping, Big Money was sore for most of the year. He is so good that when he is sore he is still good enough to win on. This however did create some bad habits that I had to fix this last few weeks but this weekend he was absolutely lights out. I think the best horse going in Canada is Peso and deserved Horse of the Year.
I went back and looked and I was one out of placing at nine rodeos but the stat I do not like is that I missed five calves. My opinion of calf roping is the complete opposite to team roping. Team roping the header takes chances on just about every run and missing is part of the game, you should never ever miss in the calf roping! Especially when I feel like my rope and my horses are the best part of my game.
I would be lying if I told you I am alright with how things went because I missed the finals by one run the last two years in a row. This is a huge fail but I was told one day that there is not such thing as failure; you just either quit or learn. I do not see quitting as an option so I better get onto the learning. I will say one thing. Last year my flanking was the weakest part of my calf roping game and this year I miss flanked two calves total. I’d say this is a huge win in that department as it has been a weak part of my game my entire life. This being said I truly have never really worked at the calf roping until the last few years. This is a green light on growth.
I think it would be easier to dissect if I did not feel like I was roping well and I was not working at my roping but I work my butt off. Anyone around me can see it. I also could dissect it if I was supper nervous and choked and I know people on the outside will say that I put too much pressure on myself but I actually was only nervous for two runs the entire last month. I feel like I kept my composure very well and controlled my emotions. I also would like to try and blame it on the draw but even though I do not feel like I drew the best I truly feel like those are all excuses and copouts. I need to look in the mirror and realize that it was me, I created this for some reason. Things were meant to happen this way and I am grateful for the pain as the discomfort makes me want it more. You learn the most in the hardest times.
I let down my sponsors (I am so lucky to have the sponsors I have and how much they support me), my friends, the people that follow these blogs, my horses (I always seem to have good horses), my family but most of all myself. I do not want any pat on the back comments or sympathetic comments. These are the facts and the reality and challenge of sports. These frustrations are the reason I love to rope. I absolutely do not like the comments of “next rodeo” or “next year”, the best do it NOW. So that is what I will do, it starts NOW for next year.
I really like the outdoors and the tv show Alone. The guy who won said something that stuck with me “smooth waters do not make great Sailors!”.
Congrats to everyone that make the CFR and the NFR!
