Canada Rig Activity 2015-2026.
A few trends:
• Alberta activity is seasonal, with busier winters (up to 280 rigs over the past few years) and slower springs.
• Alberta still has a large number of drilling rigs (100+) active over the spring break.
• Saskatchewan also exhibits seasonal variability, with drilling activity slowing down to near zero in the spring, up to 45 in the winter and around 35 in the summer and fall.
• British Columbia drilling is constant year round, with about 15 rigs drilling steadily. Those numbers barely moved since 2021.
• Winter drilling is lower after 2020, potentially as a result of decreased oil sands expansion and less delineation drilling.
• 2019 did not have a busy winter season (compared to previous summer and fall).
• 2026 summer is almost as active as preceding winter (around 225 rigs drilling in Canada).

Overall, British Columbia drilling seems to be suppressed or limited, probably by depressed natural gas price, while Alberta and Saskatchewan activity is increasing, probably as a result of combined favorable government policy and increasing oil price.

Parallax Energy Operating Inc. drilled well PARALLAX HZ JOFFRE 11-4-40-27 in July 2026 to a total depth of 7,252 meters in the Formation, at a vertical depth of 2,400 m. The well neatly drains the southern half of section 5-40-27W4. In the lateral section, the well has a mile each in the ongoing and return leg, for a total of 4,400 horizontal meters (2.7 miles); the return leg even extends below the surface location, in the build shadow.
With this, there are now a half dozen U-Turn wells drilled in Canada, in the Montney, Duvernay and Cardium Formations.

New record for onshore well depth in Canada! Paramount Resources Ltd drilled well PARA HZ WILLGR 6-19-39-5 to a total depth of 9,605 meters (31,512 ft), exceeding the previous Canada onshore record (KIWETINOHKENERGY SIMON 12-27-62-25) by 105 meters.
The well targets the Formation at a vertical depth of 3,350 meters, and extends for an impressive 6,000 meters in the lateral section. Drilling concluded in July 2026 and the wellpath travels through 6 section of land.
Phoenix Technology Services provided directional services on rig Fox Drilling 8.
*The overall deepest well in Canada remains HMDC Hibernia B-16 56 (OPA2) drilled to 10,122 meters offshore Newfoundland.

At the height of the winter season, 244 rigs were active in Canada, an occupancy of 70%. We are now at 222 rigs active in Canada, close to winter levels and 66% occupancy rate of the shrinking fleet.

Multilateral well development in the Formation.
The approach replaces fracked single leg horizontals in the northern extent of the massive Viewfield strike area in SE Saskatchewan.
Operators that adopted the technology over the past few years include Whitecap Resources Inc. (previously as Veren/Crescent Point, blue wells on map), Cache Island Corp. (purple wells) and Saturn Oil + Gas Inc. (green wells on map).
Well length is increasing: the first generation (2021-2023) of pitchfork wells had 1 mile lateral legs, the next batch (2023-2025) went to predominantly 2 mile legs. A few recent wells are planned with 3 mile lateral legs.
