Multilateral well development in the Formation.
The approach replaces fracked single leg horizontals in the northern extent of the massive Viewfield strike area in SE Saskatchewan.
Operators that adopted the technology over the past few years include Whitecap Resources Inc. (previously as Veren/Crescent Point, blue wells on map), Cache Island Corp. (purple wells) and Saturn Oil + Gas Inc. (green wells on map).
Well length is increasing: the first generation (2021-2023) of pitchfork wells had 1 mile lateral legs, the next batch (2023-2025) went to predominantly 2 mile legs. A few recent wells are planned with 3 mile lateral legs.

Shell wells (orange) and ARC Resources Ltd. wells (red) outline an emerging Montney behemoth. Shell recently announced the acquisition of ARC Resources.
Other significant players in the area are Ovintiv, Tourmaline Oil Corp, Murphy Oil Corporation and Canadian Natural Resources Limited (CNRL).

Canadian analysis, comparing drilling rig days and meters drilled by year. Drilling activity (rig days) became detached from meters drilled after 2015, with advances in unconventional shale fracked wells and then with proliferation of multilateral drilling after 2021.

Exploration drilling (as opposed to pure development) dropped off sharply over the past 10-15 years, with the majority of new wells deployed as factory style repeats of previous successful wells. Drilling efficiency (higher ROP, longer wells, more meters drilled) is a direct result of this repeatability.

Cheap and fast multilateral meters adds to the dichotomy between the two metrics.
