In January of 1958, the metallurgist William Buehler was researching heat and force-resistant materials for the U.S. Navy’s Polaris program. His focus was on testing various iron-aluminum alloys. Buehler's work on this project lead to the discovery of a Nickel-Titanium alloy, which he named “NITINOL” after the project and lab it was discovered in: Nickel Titanium Naval Ordnance Laboratory”. Known today as NiTi, this shape memory alloy is used in some of the most advanced technologies Smarter Alloys creates.

A “femtosecond” is one billionth of a second. Using a form of light energy, a Femtosecond Laser cuts material on a microscopic level. It also marks and cuts materials without producing heat affected zones or damaged edges like other lasers do. This is important for the kind of shape memory alloys we work with.
