How much space do you actually need for a safe loading zone? 📏
Most facility managers start by picking equipment, then try to make the space work around it. That's backwards, and it's where a lot of loading zone headaches start.
Start with apron depth instead. You need 50 to 60 feet in front of a dock or ramp so trucks can maneuver while forklifts are still working safely nearby.
Dock and ramp spacing matters just as much. Twelve feet between positions is the bare minimum, and 14 feet gives drivers real room to back in without a stressful three-point turn.
Overhead clearance should sit at 14 feet minimum for standard truck access, and ramp gradient should stay under a 1 in 12 slope for most forklifts. Always check your equipment's specs before assuming.
Get the sequence right: requirements first, dimensions second, equipment third, and the rest of the layout falls into place. 🚛
Curious how a portable loading ramp fits into a layout like this? That's exactly the kind of question our team answers every day.
