Before You Dig in Ontario
If your project breaks ground, a locate request is required by law.
This applies to homeowners, contractors, landscapers, property owners, and anyone planning a digging project.
Common projects that require a locate include:
- Installing fences
- Building decks or sheds
- Planting trees or shrubs
- Completing landscaping work
- Installing posts, signs, or garden features
Ontario One Call notifies infrastructure owners so underground lines can be identified before work begins.
Taking this step helps prevent damage, delays, safety risks, and impacts to the underground infrastructure we all rely on.
When Is It Safe to Dig? Check Your Locate Status
Before you dig, make sure your locate package is complete and all notified infrastructure owners have responded.
Here are a few common locate status definitions:
1. Notification Sent: The utility has been notified of your request.
2. Sent to Locator: Your request has been sent to the locate team, but there is no update yet.
3. Cleared: No physical locate is required. You should receive clearance paperwork.
4. Completed: The dig area has been marked with paint or flags, and you should receive paperwork with instructions.
Do not begin digging until you have received and reviewed all required responses.
