Protecting water starts with understanding its sources, the risks, and how a community can protect it over time.
Recently, Katherine Rentsch, gave a community presentation on Source Water Protection Planning at Beausoleil Island on behalf of Crozier team Evan Finbow and Chris Gerrits and project partners Beausoleil First Nation, Ogemawahj Tribal Council, and the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks.
The presentation reviewed the community’s watershed system and water sources, current water treatment systems, Traditional Knowledge and uses of Christian, Hope, and Beckwith Islands, and the Islands’ risks for source water contamination. The goal is to build a Committee that will help implement risk mitigation plans based on best practices.
As communities plan for long-term water security, Crozier is supporting regulation-based and community-led strategies that bring technical expertise, Traditional Knowledge, and practical risk management together to help protect water for future generations.
