At VBM, how we mine is just as important as what we mine.

For us, Earth Day highlights the connection between mining and environmental responsibility. This year’s theme, “Our Power, Our Planet,” reflects the importance of shared progress in protecting the land around us.

In Sudbury, our regreening efforts are one of the world’s largest reclamation success stories and a clear example of what responsible mining can achieve.

What began in the 1970s as a research initiative to grow grass on mine tailings has evolved into a collective effort spanning industry, government, researchers and the local community.

Today, Sudbury is home to mature forests with over 10 million trees planted.

In Brazil, in collaboration with Vale S.A., we help protect 800,000 hectares of the Amazon rainforest, demonstrating that mining and environmental conservation can coexist.

These initiatives continue to shape how we operate today, delivering the materials the world needs, responsibly.

We completed construction and opened our $2.94 billion Voisey's Bay Mine Expansion Project in northern Labrador, a major milestone that will increase production of nickel concentrate—a critical mineral essential to security of supply, economic independence and the energy transition.

The expansion project transitioned our Voisey's Bay operations from open pit mining to underground mining and involved the development of two underground mines—Reid Brook and Eastern Deeps. These will deliver concentrate for processing at our Long Harbour Processing Plant, one of the lowest-emission nickel processing plants in the world!

Late last week, Women in Mining Sudbury hosted its first annual “Mining for Diversity” Gala at the Steelworker’s Hall in Sudbury, Ontario.

The event brought together Vale Base Metals and other community industry leaders, advocates for diversity, and community members to celebrate the achievements of women in the mining industry.

Winners were presented with bursaries and one of the recipients was Vale Base Metals Kim Dwyer.

Kim is a Production Supervisor in Logistics Support at Copper Cliff Mine South. She received the Trailblazer Award for her leadership as a frontline supervisor, where she is known as a mentor and coach for the next generation of miners and a champion for a respectful work culture.

Congratulations Kim on this well deserved recognition!

Our Voisey’s Bay Mine Expansion (VBME) Project realized a significant milestone last week when we successfully started up the Bulk Material Handling System at the Eastern Deeps underground mine.

We can now transfer ore from underground to the surface via a conveyor instead of trucks which will significantly boost the volume and speed of high-grade ore transportation.

The operations will be safer and more sustainable and we look forward to achieving full milling capacity.

Clydach Nickel Refinery’s General Manager Darren Poland recently participated in a meeting hosted by Wales First Minister Eluned Morgan.

The meeting also involved members of Gellionnen Chapel, area Swansea Council Coordinators, and Welsh school YGG Gellionnen.

It was an opportunity for First Minister Morgan to seek out perspectives and feedback on how to support those in the area who are food insecure.

Employees at our Clydach operation have a strong connection to supporting those in need—from donations and volunteering at local food banks, to creating food hampers for families—and we are proud of how they are making a positive impact in the community.

Thank you to First Minister Morgan for inviting us, and to our community partners for sharing their expertise.

Last week, our Ontario operations in Port Colborne, Mississauga and Sudbury welcomed over 70 Grade 9 students as part of the 'Take Our Kids to Work Day'.

The students had a day packed with tours and presentations showcasing today's modern mining.

Take Our Kids to Work Day is an annual event that allows students in the ninth grade to shadow professionals (and parents!) in real-world settings. It lets students explore career paths and better understand work environments and encourages them to start thinking about their future.

We hope the students enjoyed their time seeing our workplaces and hearing from our talented employees. We were honoured to be able to provide them with a meaningful look at our operations, see what their parents do at work (pretty cool, right?), and highlight the variety of career opportunities available in the modern mining sector.

Today is Indigenous Veterans Day in Canada.

It's a day to reflect and honour the immense contributions of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit people to Canada’s military service.

It's also important to acknowledge the unique challenges and injustices they faced during and after their time in the military.

They often had to overcome significant obstacles to serve in uniform—from learning a new language and adapting to cultural differences, to traveling great distances from remote communities just to enlist. When many Indigenous veterans returned home, they discovered their sacrifices were met with unfair treatment and systemic discrimination.

As we continue on Canada’s journey of reconciliation, let's use this day to reflect, learn and do better.

Today we honour the courage and resilience of Indigenous veterans and ensure their stories are never forgotten.

Last month, the Vale Clydach Nickel Refinery hosted seven external emergency agencies for a major emergency exercise as part of their offsite emergency plan.

The eight external emergency agencies included: Police, Fire Service, the Welsh Ambulance service, Public Health Wales, Swansea City Council Emergency Planning Department, National Health Service, RGM Security (our contracted security company) and Natural Resources Wales – plus 22 of our own employees, including two from our operation in Long Harbour, Canada.

Our Clydach operations undertakes these intense, two-hour-long multi-agency exercises every three years. For this simulation, the multi-agency, multidisciplinary team had to problem-solve what to do if 850kg of vaporised SO2 was unintentionally released into the air. The amount of planning and cooperation between the different agencies, stakeholders, departments at Clydach as well as Long Harbour, was key to the success of the exercise.

Thank you to our community partners for helping us stay prepared and to our employees for their ongoing commitment to safety.
