Hevvy/Toyo Pumps

Hevvy/Toyo Pumps Hevvy Pumps is the evolution of Toyo Pumps N.A. In Hevvy Pumps we’ve created a company that embodies the values of imagination and continuous improvement.

Hevvy pushes the limits of design to propel the future and challenge the industry to wake up and challenge itself to be more reliable, efficient and accountable to its customers and the environment. It’s an exciting new future when “Heritage” and “Imagination” meet for the best of both worlds.

In slurry applications, harsh conditions quickly expose weak details.

That’s why building heavy-duty equipment goes far beyond assembling components.

Before a pump reaches the field, there are:
• Application reviews
• Engineering discussions
• Material decisions
• Machining tolerances
• Production checks
• Testing and inspection

Because in abrasive environments, long-term performance is often shaped by the decisions made long before startup.

At Hevvy Pumps, that process happens every day across engineering, production, and service teams focused on one thing:

Building equipment ready for real operating conditions.

One of the realities of heavy industries is that applications evolve over time.

Production targets increase.
Operating conditions shift.
Slurry characteristics change.

But many pumping systems continue operating with their original configuration long after the application itself has changed.

The result usually isn’t immediate failure.
It’s a gradual operational loss:
• Higher wear
• Shorter service intervals
• More maintenance intervention
• Reduced efficiency

And that’s why long-term performance doesn’t stop at installation. As operations evolve, pumping applications often need to be re-evaluated, adjusted, and aligned with field realities.

Because sometimes the challenge isn’t the pump itself. It’s that the operation has evolved beyond what the original configuration was designed to handle.

In slurry applications, “solids content” alone doesn’t tell the full story.
Two slurries can have the same percentage of solids and behave completely differently in a pumping system.
Why?
Because slurry behaviour is also shaped by:
• Particle size
• Particle shape
• Specific gravity
• Settling characteristics
• Abrasiveness
• Viscosity

That’s why a pump that performs well in one application may struggle in another that seems similar on paper.

In mining, tailings-handling and water-recirculation systems often behave very differently from steel mill scale or wastewater management applications, even when operating at similar flow rates.

Understanding the slurry itself allows pumping solutions to be designed around actual operating conditions, not assumptions.

Because in slurry pumping, the material being moved changes the entire equation.

Since 1979, Hevvy/Toyo Pumps has focused on one thing: slurry pumping.

Over the years, applications have changed. Operations have evolved. Production demands have increased.

But one thing has remained the same: the need for pumping solutions engineered for real operating conditions.

As one of the last independent slurry pump designers and manufacturers, our size and focus allow us to remain agile, work closely with customers, and tailor solutions to the application itself.

Because in abrasive, high-solids environments, long-term performance rarely comes from a one-size-fits-all approach.

It comes from understanding the operation, listening to the people running it, and continuing to evolve alongside the industry.

A plastics recycling operation was experiencing frequent pump blockages while handling wastewater containing chopped plastic particles.

The installed pumps were marketed for solids handling. But in the field, they continuously plugged.

After evaluating the application, Hevvy/Toyo replaced them with cantilever pumps featuring recessed impellers, engineered to handle 4” diameter solids.

The difference was immediate:
• Blockages disappeared
• Maintenance became simpler
• No expensive mechanical seals required

The customer later expanded the system with additional Hevvy cantilever pumps capable of passing solids up to 150 mm (6”).

Because in abrasive and solids-heavy applications, the real question isn’t whether a pump can move solids. It’s whether it was actually engineered for them.

Seal failures rarely occur out of the blue.

Packed seal failures often come down to two avoidable issues:
⚠️ Solids contamination
⚠️ Overheating from poor lubrication or cooling

The result? Premature wear, damaged shafts, unnecessary downtime, and costly repairs.

In our latest blog, we break down the most common causes of packing failure—and the proper steps for replacement and adjustment.

A little maintenance knowledge can save a lot of downtime.

Reliable slurry solutions are built through collaboration long before they reach the field.
Behind every slurry pump solution, there’s more than engineering drawings and specifications.
• There are conversations between departments.
• Adjustments during production.
• Application reviews.
• Testing.
• Revisions.
At Hevvy Pumps, our engineering, production, service, and sales teams work closely throughout the process to ensure each solution aligns with the conditions it will encounter in the field.

Because in heavy industry, performance is rarely the result of a single decision.
It comes from hundreds of small ones, carefully made by people who understand the application.

In most applications, leakage is seen as failure.
But in packed slurry pump systems, a controlled leak is often intentional.
Why? Because sealing a rotating shaft completely creates friction, and friction creates heat.
Without cooling and lubrication, packing can quickly harden, wear, and fail, especially in abrasive slurry applications like mining and steel processing.

That’s why details like flush water, packing selection, and operating conditions matter far more than most people realize.
