Our Story
Originally built in 1952 by Canadian Oil Companies Limited, the refinery became part of Shell’s operations when we purchased Canadian Oil in 1963. Since then, we have completed numerous upgrades, modernized the equipment and added new facilities and technology to meet current product regulations and environmental legislation. The site, known as the Shell’s Sarnia Manufacturing Centre, al

so referred to as Shell's Corunna Refinery, employs approximately 350 people. Additional contractors may be brought in to provide support for both routine operations and major maintenance activities. The number of contractors on site at any given time varies according to the type of work underway.

Shell employees Ryan McLean, Trevor Fortin and Chris Santiago had a great time at the 2026 Emergency Preparedness Day on Saturday!

They were kept busy giving tours of the truck and helping the kids turn on the lights, sirens and announce their names over the loudspeaker.

Thank you to BASES for all your efforts organizing this event.

In honour of Mental Health Awareness Week, Shell employees took a break from their everyday roles and headed out to the beautiful St. Clair River for a walk. We even had the pleasure of watching a cruise ship sail by!

The team was welcomed back with some healthy treats and a talk on social connection led by our Occupational Health Nurse Sarah Carter.

A great time was had by all filled with comradery, laughter and support for one another.

We are pleased to have partnered with the Noelle’s Gift Closet Initiative for the next 5 years. The funds will be used to fill the closets at St. Joseph Catholic School and Sir John Moore Community School, both in Corunna, with the items most needed by the students – these items may include back to school supplies, clothing or hygiene items.

The Noelle’s Gift Closet Initiative started in 2022 and enables students to access supplies when they need them the most, in the moment and discretely, supporting an inclusive learning environment.

Shell employees Christine Hodge, Joel Stein, Daniel Tardif and Angie VanDenHeuvel had the privilege of joining the staff at both schools, and representatives from Noelle’s Gift, for a tour and to learn more about the initiative.

Shell employees and their families were busy this weekend at the 13th annual CANstruction event in support of the Inn of the Good Shepherd. Our team designed and created a structure titled "Feed-the-Need Speedway", which won the award for Best Meal.

Thank you to all who helped organize the event!
