Our Story
Originally built in 1952 by Canadian Oil Companies Limited, the refinery became part of Shell’s operations when we purchased Canadian Oil in 1963. Since then, we have completed numerous upgrades, modernized the equipment and added new facilities and technology to meet current product regulations and environmental legislation. The site, known as the Shell’s Sarnia Manufacturing Centre, also referred to as Shell's Corunna Refinery, employs approximately 350 people. Additional contractors may be brought in to provide support for both routine operations and major maintenance activities. The number of contractors on site at any given time varies according to the type of work underway.

This morning our emergency alarms sounded for a small fire. Our site Emergency Response Team responded and was quickly able to extinguish it. All personnel have been accounted for.

All safety precautions and standard regulatory protocols are being followed.

We will be starting a period of planned maintenance that will last for approximately two weeks. As a result, the community may notice elevated flaring and noise.

Additional air monitoring will be initiated, and all safety precautions and standard regulatory protocols will be followed. Required notifications will be issued and updates made as needed.

We appreciate the patience and understanding of the community as we execute this maintenance work.

Shell employees spent the morning spreading a little kindness throughout the community ahead of the Thanksgiving weekend.

As part of Shell’s nationwide Day of Caring, members of our team visited Foodland and No Frills in Corunna, as well as No Frills in Sarnia, helping bag groceries and surprise shoppers with a $25 grocery gift card.

We are grateful for the opportunity to connect with our neighbours and brighten a few days along the way.

From all of us at Shell, we wish you a Happy Thanksgiving weekend.

Shell is proud to support the future of agriculture and community

Yesterday, employees David Moses, Bryan Jeffrey, Desiree Steiger and Dana Mitchell joined members of the Moore Agricultural Society to officially announce Shell's $75,000 contribution to the Brigden Fairgrounds. We even had the privilege of being joined by Katie Mills and her heifer Lady!

This funding has supported retrofitting two cattle barns, with additional fire protection infrastructure improvements planned for the future.

St. Clair Township and the broader Sarnia-Lambton region have a proud agricultural heritage. Shell is pleased to support projects that help preserve and strengthen these important community spaces while encouraging, educating, and celebrating our agricultural roots for generations to come.

Shell Production Team members put their construction skills to the test while volunteering at the Habitat for Humanity build in Forest.

The team stayed busy constructing front entrance steps, laying flooring in two of the units, and installing hardware on the kitchen cabinetry.

A big thank you to everyone who dedicated their time, energy and expertise to support this meaningful project. Through your efforts, you’ve helped build more than just homes. You’ve created hope, stability, and opportunity for local families. Your hard work will make a lasting difference in the lives of homeowners and contribute to a stronger, more vibrant community for years to come.

We will be participating in a joint training exercise with St. Clair Township Fire Department this evening, from approximately 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. As a result, the community may notice emergency response personnel and vehicles at the Chemical Plant on Lasalle Line.

This training allows us to have confidence in our ability to respond together and provides an opportunity for continued improvement in our emergency response efforts.

Should a real emergency occur during this time, notifications will be issued.

Shell employees were busy again at the Habitat for Humanity Build in Forest.

This time, it was the Pressure Equipment Integrity team that joined the initiative. Like our other teams, they continued painting and also put their construction skills to the test by assembling planter boxes.

Thanks to our Shell team and Habitat for Humanity Sarnia/Lambton for all your hard work, dedication, and commitment to supporting our community.

Starting this evening, August 27, we are expecting some increased flaring and noise at our site.

At this time, there is no action required from the community as a result of these activities. It is important to note the flare system is a process safety device at the refinery and is a normal and vital part of unit shutdown and start-up activities.

All safety precautions and standard regulatory protocols are being followed. Unit restoration is likely to occur in approximately two weeks.
