Carport, framed in for better weather protection. The homeowner wanted to make this carport less exposed to wind, snow, and weather, with plans to eventually add a garage door and security grates.

For this project, we framed in the front opening, added pony walls along the sides for future decorative security grates, and matched the existing true 1x8 lap cedar siding so the new work tied into the home.

We also amended an existing beam for greater support and patched/sided an opening on the exterior of the house while we were there.

Practical upgrades like this can make a space more useful, protected, and ready for the next phase.

We’re B.I.G. Timber Contracting — a carpenter-led general contracting crew serving the Comox Valley & Campbell River.

Demo always tells a story. Once we opened up our Courtenay 14th St. addition project, we uncovered 3 layers of siding stacked over time, a bit of the house’s history in each layer.

From there, we relocated a tree to make room for the addition, then moved into excavation, forming, and getting everything prepped for the pour.

Check our stories to see clips from this morning and where we’re currently at in this project!

The client came to us with an AI rendering of a custom notice board — our job was to turn it into something that actually works in the real world.

The next step was sketching it into shop drawings to dial in how it would come together before anything got built.

Built from clear grain cedar with tight joinery, this one was all about keeping the details clean and durable.

If you’ve got something in mind and aren’t sure how to bring it to life, we’re always open to chatting it through.

After 3 months on site, Evan’s officially part of the team. It’s a milestone for Evan, and for B.I.G — because he is our very first employee and carpenter apprentice.

So far, Evan has been hands on with demo, framing and siding. He’s a solid addition to the crew - showing up ready for work and looking for opportunities to learn.

We’re happy to be part of Evan’s journey into the trade, and soon, he’ll begin his Carpentry Level 1 at North Island College.

Stoked to have you on the team, Evan!

From a distance, the build looks simple — two minimalist boxes wrapped in yellow cedar. Look closer, and you’ll notice what appears to be a random layout of board and batten siding. But what looks organic at first glance is actually a carefully designed 14-step repeating pattern, created by as part of his Net Zero home close to the Comox shoreline.

The goal was to achieve a natural, balanced look — one that would blend into the coastal landscape over time.

The board and batten layout on this project wasn’t just a visual decision — it reflects a deeper philosophy behind the whole build.

As a certified Passive House designer, Kelvin Humenny approaches every decision with performance, simplicity, and site in mind.

The 14-step cedar pattern brings softness and variation to the façade through layout alone — no stains, paints, or added finishes. Leaving the siding untreated allows the cedar to silver naturally over time, helping both buildings blend into the surrounding sand, beach grass, and shoreline.

That same thinking extended to the home’s structure. Both buildings were constructed with SIPs (Structural Insulated Panels) to meet Step 5 of the BC Energy Step Code and achieve Net Zero performance. Our team at B.I.G. Timber handled the SIPs install — and thanks to a precise install process and airtight attention to detail, the home tested better than Passive House standards for air changes per hour.

Every step of this build was designed to collaborate with nature — not just visually, but functionally. It’s a project that pairs thoughtful design with disciplined building — and we’re proud to have been a part of it.

Timber framing with rough-cut timbers, every piece is slightly different. Some have knots, some have a slight bow, and none of them are perfectly identical.

So, assembling the trusses requires a little extra problem solving.

Each piece gets oriented so the best faces are visible. Templates are made so the angles repeat consistently. Joints are test-fit before fastening to make sure everything seats properly.

Once the trusses are assembled on the ground, they’re ready for the next step — lifting them into place.

Next in the series: installing the timber trusses.

Small upgrades in tight spaces, more comfortable daily routines. For this Comox bathroom renovation, we expanded the ensuite shower, raised the ceiling from 7’ to 8’, and updated the powder room.

Both bathrooms received new floor tile, toilets, and vanities — with careful planning behind the walls and clean finish work throughout.

We are - a carpenter owned General Contracting company serving Campbell River and Comox Valley with home renovations, additions, and custom carpentry projects.
