🚨 Blue-Green Algae Awareness 🚨

Blue-green algae (also known as cyanobacteria) are naturally found in ponds, rivers, lakes, and streams—and they’re something to watch for from May to October.

While they aren’t always visible, they can quickly grow into large blooms or mats. Once they appear in a body of water, they’re likely to return—so it’s important to stay alert.

⚠️ Stay Safe Around Blue-Green Algae:
• Don’t touch the water or algae
• Don’t drink the water
• Avoid swimming, bathing, or playing in it
• Keep children and pets away (don’t let them drink or swim)
• Wash with clean water if contact occurs
• Use safe, alternative water sources (boiling or treating won’t remove toxins)
• Be cautious with activities like boating that create spray
• Avoid eating fish organs (toxins can accumulate there)
• Seek medical help if you feel unwell
• Contact a vet immediately if your pet is exposed

Staying informed helps protect you, your family, and your pets. If in doubt—stay out! 💧

Mental Health Matters at Work 🧠💬

Mental health is just as important as physical safety on the job. Stress, fatigue, and personal challenges can affect focus, decision-making, and overall well-being—and that impacts everyone.

Creating a safe workplace means looking out for each other, both physically and mentally.

💡 What Can We Do?

🔹 Check in with yourself and others
A simple “Are you okay?” can make a big difference.

🔹 Speak up early
If something doesn’t feel right—whether it’s stress, burnout, or workload—don’t wait. Reach out.

🔹 Take breaks when needed
Rest and reset help maintain focus and prevent mistakes.

🔹 Support a positive environment
Respect, patience, and teamwork go a long way in reducing stress.

🔹 Know your resources
Use available supports like Employee Assistance Programs or talk to a supervisor if you need help.

⚠️ Why It Matters

When mental health is overlooked, it can lead to fatigue, reduced concentration, and increased risk of incidents. Taking care of your mental well-being helps keep you—and your team—safe.

You’re not alone. Support is always available.
Let’s continue to build a workplace where it’s okay to speak up and look out for one another. 💙

Breathing Box Safety: Use It Right, Stay Protected ⚠️

The Bullard Clean Air Box (CAB)—also known as a breathing box—plays a critical role in protecting workers. It filters and monitors compressed air to ensure it’s safe before reaching supplied-air respirators or blast helmets.

It removes particulates, oil mist, odors, and moisture—and continuously monitors for carbon monoxide (CO).

🚨 Important Reminder: The breathing box has three modes: Run, Test, and Cal. It has been observed that units are sometimes left in Calibration mode to silence alarms.

⚠️ This is dangerous. If the unit is not in RUN mode, it will NOT detect CO—meaning you won’t be alerted to a potentially life-threatening hazard.

🔧 Safety Reminders

• The breathing box does not create oxygen—it only filters supplied air
• Always use a compressor certified for breathing air
• Ensure the intake is in clean, uncontaminated air (away from exhaust, dust collectors, etc.)
• Keep the unit upright at all times

▶️ Proper Start-Up
Purge moisture from air lines before connecting
Connect power (or ensure battery is charged)
Set CO monitor to TEST (prevents low flow alarm at startup)
Attach airlines
Turn ON the monitor and wait for the 60-second countdown
Switch to RUN mode once air and power are connected ✅

⏹️ Proper Shutdown
Shut off incoming air
Release pressure using the relief valve
Turn off CO monitor (hold button for 3 seconds)
Wait for confirmation beeps
Turn control box OFF
Disconnect airlines
Install dust caps to keep fittings clean

Bottom line: Your breathing box is only effective if it’s used correctly. Always operate in RUN mode—your safety depends on it.

What Does a JOHSC Do? 🤔

You may have wondered what a JOHSC is—and why it matters. Great question!

A Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committee (JOHSC) brings workers and management together with one shared goal: making sure everyone goes home safe at the end of the day.

So, what happens at JOHSC meetings?

🔍 Hazard Identification
Review incidents and near misses, take part in inspections, and bring forward safety concerns from the team.

💡 Safety Improvements
Make recommendations to improve equipment, procedures, and training—and request the info needed to address safety issues.

📣 Promoting Safety Awareness
Support safety talks and training, encourage reporting hazards, and help build a strong safety-first culture.

📋 Reviewing Policies & Programs
Ensure safety programs are effective and that we’re meeting provincial OHS regulations and responsibilities.

📝 Stay Informed
Meeting minutes are recorded and shared—check the Health & Safety Boards to stay up to date.

If you ever have a question or concern, reach out to your JOHSC representative. Your voice plays a key role in keeping our workplace safe.

Safety is a team effort. 💪

📻 Clear Radio Communication

Ever been in a meeting where everyone talks at once? It gets confusing fast—and you miss important details. The same thing happens on the radio.

When multiple people speak at the same time, messages get lost. And in the workplace, that’s not just frustrating—it can be dangerous. Miscommunication over handheld radios has led to real incidents. But the good news? It’s preventable.

✅ Keep your radio communication clear and safe:

• Don’t talk over others – wait your turn before speaking
• Only respond when called – confirm when you’re ready to receive a message
• Be mindful of what you say – radio channels are often public
• Check your battery – a dead radio won’t help in an emergency
• Stay connected – check in regularly with your team
• Keep it short & clear – use simple radio language:

“Over” = I’m finished speaking
“Copy” = I understand
“Say again” = Please repeat
“Break, break, break” = Emergency—clear the channel

Clear communication isn’t just good practice—it’s a critical safety tool.
