REPMUS26 – JASCO team update 📢

That’s a wrap on Week 0 at REPMUS 26 in Portugal — and what a week it’s been.

Multiple JASCO team members arrived in Tróia this week to mobilize and deploy autonomous assets in support of the Underwater Warfare Focus Area (UWW FA), and Rapid Environmental Assessment Focus Area (REA FA).

The following assets have been prepared for deployment near Tróia, Portugal:
🔹SeaTrac USV with JASCO Dipping Sonar
🔹Two JASCO Passive Acoustic Monitoring (PAM) Buoys
🔹Four JASCO Autonomous Multi-channel Acoustic Recorders (AMARs) on Bottom Landers
🔹Nine Teledyne Slocum Gliders fitted with JASCO Observer-Snout PAM Systems
🔹One JASCO OceanEcho: Acoustic Active-Passive Sonar System

We’re looking forward to another fantastic exercise alongside participants from around the world as we collaborate, share expertise, and demonstrate the capabilities of Maritime Unmanned Systems (MUS).

🔦 Services Spotlight: Acoustic Data Analysis

Transforming underwater sound into meaningful insight requires more than just data—it takes skilled and experienced personnel, advanced tools, scientific expertise, and careful review.

JASCO provides:
🔹 Actionable and timely information
🔹 Preliminary field interpretations
🔹 Fully analyzed results in comprehensive reports
🔹 Multi-year synthesis that describes evolving soundscapes

JASCO’s acoustic data analysis services help clients progress and conduct their at-sea business and operations. JASCO analytics enables customers to mitigate harm to fauna, satisfy regulatory reporting requirements, enable naval and marine surveillance and security operations, provides scientific records and supporting evidence and ground-truth training datasets for AI-based acoustic analysis systems.

Our comprehensive analysis software suites are continually developed and refined to keep pace with industry innovation and our own internal research programs. Supported by high-performance computing clusters, we efficiently and reliably process large volumes of acoustic data to provide:

🔹 Automated marine mammal call detection and identification
🔹 Ambient sound level calculations
🔹 Detection and quantification of seismic, vessel, and pile-driving sounds
🔹 Manual review of audio samples and spectrograms
🔹 Real-time PAM support in the field

Our bioacousticians review detections, interpret vocalizations in project-specific context, and tailor analysis protocols to support each client’s objectives.

Each report undergoes rigorous editorial and scientific review to ensure results are accurate, defensible, and focused on the information and questions that matter most to your project.

Wrapping up Orca Action Month 💙🐋

Orca Action Month is an annual initiative in June dedicated to raising awareness and inspiring action for the recovery of Southern Resident killer whales (SRKW). Originally established by Orca Network as Orca Awareness Month, it brings together researchers, conservation organizations, and communities to celebrate the iconic orcas of the Salish Sea while highlighting the challenges they face.

JASCO is proud to support these conservation efforts through the Port of Vancouver’s ECHO vessel slowdown, helping monitor for SRKW using detections from the Boundary Pass underwater listening station (ULS).

This year’s slowdown was initiated on June 15 with visual and acoustic detections of SRKW (including a new calf!) in Haro Strait. The following day, the Boundary Pass ULS detected the whales, recording the calls and echolocation clicks featured in this post.

🎉 This June also marks an important milestone: Six years of continuous operation for the Boundary Pass Underwater Listening Station in collaboration with Transport Canada.

Since 2020, the ULS has provided valuable acoustic data that supports marine mammal research, conservation, and responsible marine operations throughout the Salish Sea. By listening beneath the surface, we can better understand, protect, and coexist with these incredible animals.

A new call to action from OCEANOISE on 2026. 🌊

Scientists from JASCO Applied Sciences joined experts from around the world at the fourth edition of the OCEANOISE conference series in late May. The conference closed with a plenary discussion that led to a shared, urgent message: effective technologies and regulations are needed now to reduce human-produced noise in the ocean. It was agreed that such a statement would be published on World Ocean Day.

One Ocean, One Climate, One Future — Together.

The JASCO team is gearing up for an exciting few days of Offshore Renewable Energy conversations at next weeks "2026 State of the Science on Offshore Energy, Wildlife, and Fisheries".

2025 marked another strong year in offshore wind for JASCO, as our teams have supported every offshore wind project currently built, or under construction in the United States. Next week, we’re excited to bring that experience to the conversation at the 2026 State of the Science Workshop.

On June 8th, our Director of Strategic Programs Laura Morse will host “The Application of Passive Acoustics for Offshore Wind: A Comprehensive Review of the Use of Passive Acoustics During Construction and Operation”.

David Zeddies, Chief Scientist, and Jessica Hiltz, Project Manager, will also be presenting during the workshop, sharing insights from JASCO’s work in passive acoustics for offshore wind construction and operations. *If you are interested in attending the workshop in person, please register using the link below.

On June 9th, Samuel Denes, Project Scientist, will present analysis and lessons learned from sound field verification of pile driving from more than 250 foundation installations at offshore wind farms on the U.S. Outer Continental Shelf.
