For this rainy Tuesday, we’re sharing a mudroom transformation. ⁣
⁣
Staying true to the home’s historic charm, we revamped the space by adding two coat closets including refinished vintage doors, a much-needed powder room, custom cabinetry, a vintage sink (that faucet? yes please!), and of course a nook for 🐶. ⁣

This mudroom is now ready to serve this growing family!⁣

Story Time

There’s something special about having your own space when you’re a kid.

Growing up watching Home Alone I always wanted a cool attic space. A place where I could build a blanket fort, display my stuffies, alphabetize my books (no? Just me? 😅)…

This attic was the perfect blank slate. It had great head height, a surprising amount of sunlight, and was ready for a transformation!

We removed, honed and finished the existing attic plank floor, replaced the broken window, and used restored beams as ceiling and wall caps to match the floor.

This attic is now the perfect nook to dive into your favorite story.

The Bernstein Bears, Little Critters, Franklin The Turtle? 🐢

Safety First

While we love historic homes, our top priority is safety.

With a quick moving toddler, and one on the way (congratulations! 💕) - this lovely historic house is home to a busy family.

They wanted to preserve the original woodwork but felt uneasy navigating around the low banister.

So, we came up with a plan.

We carefully removed the banister and balusters, built a foot high wall, and reinstalled the original balusters and banister.

In the end, the timeless woodwork stands tall, while the foot high wall adds necessary height and strength.

Old-world charm with modern-day safety never looked better!

Restoring the exterior of this coach house was definitely a project, but we loved (almost) every minute of it!⁣

1. The coach house turned this yard into the perfect art studio, a cozy spot to relax by the fireplace and the best seat for summer thunderstorms ⁣⛈️
⁣
2. The coach house had settled quite a bit so new footings and floor joists were a must! Thank you Ziplevel
⁣
3. While we waited for the custom glass doors to arrive, Shane installed a temporary door 🙃
⁣
4. Square nail construction helps us date the coach house to pre 1890s⁣ 🔨⁣
⁣
5. This window had been covered by board and batten. We removed the board and batten and repaired the window pane using a piece of wavy glass restored from a local barn⁣. Don’t worry, the vines are growing back nicely 🌿⁣
⁣
6. The rear door (which we assume was the customer entrance) has a 1858 MacDonald Tabacco Company tin nailed to it. Any thoughts on that one? ⁣Zoom in on photo 2 for another look⁣ 👀

7. Because who doesn’t love cherry blossoms? 🌸 ⁣

Springtime Blossom

This 1800s coach house was in dire need of some love and attention.

So, with a clear vision, boundless creativity, and a little work (ok… a lot of work!), this once forgotten space was transformed into an inspiring retreat for art and relaxation.

Now framed by blossoms and brimming with creative energy, this studio is a true testament to the beauty of change.

Don’t stop growing. Embrace change.
