This here was far from standard protocol. A customer had acquired a beautiful custom oversized patio door. We adapted it into an existing opening that was never meant for it. The install for something like this where you're removing an original header required us to incorporate an insulated I-Beam to carry the load with limited space. During the install we support all of the affected roof trusses with a temp wall that was built inside. After a safe install we then finished all the surrounding jam extensions and some trim in fir with a stain to match that was done by the owner, leaving a continues factory look to the original door. Then to accommodate for the beam we constructed a bold bulkhead that also doubled as housing for two new pot lights. We also added some division to the interior space with a bar top pony wall finished to the owners specifications. Much more was done at this project but we found it beneficial to share some information on our processes and building methods. We always recommend our clients to do their due diligence when planning out their next project, incorporating an engineer to structural repairs or alterations is always recommended by us. That said, This wood door was installed last fall and works better than most new standard exterior doors do after 1 Manitoba Winter. Cheers.
