At Concordia University of Edmonton’s (Concordia University of Edm.) Braaksma Hall, GlasCurtain’s Thermaframe 8 fibreglass curtain wall system is helping demonstrate what is possible when advanced glazing technology meets high-performance building envelope design.

As the first curtain wall installation in North America to incorporate vacuum-insulated glass (VIG), the project represents an important advancement in reducing heat loss while maintaining the transparency and natural daylight that contribute to comfortable, inviting learning environments.

With approximately 50% window-to-wall glazing, Braaksma Hall demonstrates how generous expanses of glass can be incorporated into buildings designed for Edmonton’s demanding climate. By combining thermally efficient fibreglass framing with vacuum-insulated glazing, the Thermaframe 8 system contributes to an estimated 30% reduction in heat loss, supporting improved occupant comfort and reduced heating demand.

The project highlights the growing potential of advanced glazing technologies to help architects balance energy efficiency, architectural expression, and the everyday experience of the people who use these spaces

A big win in San Francisco last week. 🏆

GlasCurtain’s work on the Denisiqi Services Society Child and Family Services Centre in Williams Lake, BC, was recognized at the 2026 METROPOLIS Magazine Planet Positive Awards, taking home Façade of the Year!

Designed by hcma architecture + design and SMK Architecture, the renewed and expanded centre is being created to better support the Denisiqi Services Society’s delivery of culturally grounded child and family programs for the Tsilhqot’in and Ulkatchot’en Nations.

The project uses GlasCurtain’s Thermaframe 4 double-glazed fibreglass curtain wall system to help bring generous daylight into the building while supporting thermal performance, occupant comfort, durability, and lower embodied carbon compared with conventional aluminum framing.

It was especially fitting to receive a façade award at San Francisco’s historic Hallidie Building, completed in 1918 and recognized for its pioneering suspended glass curtain wall façade. More than a century later, façade design continues to evolve around many of the same priorities: bringing in light, improving building performance, using materials more efficiently, and creating better environments for the people inside.

We’re grateful to Metropolis Magazine for the recognition, and to the entire project team helping bring this important community facility to life.

What does it take to deliver a high-performance glazed façade for one of Alberta’s major civic buildings?

Join us on September 9 as Peter Dushenski, Managing Director of GlasCurtain, presents Northern Resilience: Next-Generation Façades at Red Deer Justice Centre through Fenestration Canada’s Commercial Chapter.

Peter will share a behind-the-scenes look at the project, including the role of Thermaframe 7 fibreglass curtain wall, the technical challenges of designing for a demanding climate, and the collaboration required to bring the façade from design through delivery.

At Edmonton’s Mosaic Centre, daylight and transparency are central to the architecture, with expansive glazing opening interior spaces to natural light throughout the building. In a cold climate, however, that level of glazing also places greater demands on the building envelope.

GlasCurtain’s fibreglass-framed curtain wall helps reduce thermal bridging and heat loss at the framing, supporting warmer interior surface temperatures and improved occupant comfort while allowing the architectural vision for an open, daylight-filled workplace to remain intact.

Completed more than a decade ago, the Mosaic Centre continues to demonstrate how thoughtful façade design can bring together energy performance and architectural expression, using the right materials to make generous glazing work more efficiently over the long term.

We have some very exciting news to share: Braaksma Hall at Concordia University of Edmonton (Concordia University of Edm.) has been shortlisted for Best Use of Glass at the 2026 Society of Facade Engineering (SFE) Awards (SFE Facade Awards).

To see this Edmonton project recognized alongside some of the most ambitious glass and façade work internationally is a meaningful achievement for everyone involved, and a strong reflection of what can happen when design ambition, material innovation, and building performance are considered together!

Braaksma Hall brought vacuum insulating glass into a curtain wall application for the first time in North America, pairing VIG with GlasCurtain’s Thermaframe 8 fibreglass framing system.

We are so proud to see this project recognized on an international stage! Congratulations to Concordia University of Edmonton, Reimagine, Najfeldt Architect, Glass 8 Group of Companies, Chandos Construction,
and everyone who helped bring Braaksma Hall to life.

☀️ Last week we had the pleasure of being in Vancouver for Zak World of Façades ()! Our first time in the city for this conference series and we’re only disappointed that it’s not every year... Perfect weather, stunning venue, engaging conversations, and exciting opportunities being created at every turn.

Our message about supply chains 🔗 and the increasing importance of procurement specifications *really* resonated with the audience, particularly in the face of soaring HVAC capital costs and longer lead times for mechanical systems.

It’s true! 🏗️ There’s never been a better time to invest in 100% Canadian-made building envelopes, and particularly fibreglass-framing: it makes all the difference between so-so and world-class buildings.

Follow GlasCurtain inc. for more, and reach out to learn how our low-carbon fibreglass-framed curtain walls can drive value and quality to your next commercial or institutional project. 🌎

See you at the next one!

As an Alberta-based manufacturer, we couldn’t miss the first-ever Calgary edition of Zak World of Façades!

GlasCurtain joined the conversation with Northern Resilience: Zero-Tariff Façades for Net-Zero Buildings, a presentation on how local manufacturing, supply chain reliability, and high-performance fibreglass-framed curtain wall systems can support more resilient buildings in demanding climates.

The session used the Red Deer Justice Centre as a case study, showing how thoughtful specification can help public infrastructure reduce thermal bridging, improve long-term performance, and lower carbon impact through Canadian-made systems.

Red Deer Justice Centre is one of GlasCurtain’s largest and most ambitious projects to date.

Designed by and , the building’s undulating façade required a curtain wall system that could support the architectural vision while meeting the long-term performance demands of public infrastructure in Alberta’s climate.

GlasCurtain’s fibreglass-framed Thermaframe 7 system was used to help reduce thermal bridging, improve comfort near the glass, and support more predictable building performance over time. For a courthouse designed to serve the community for decades, long-term value starts with an envelope that can hold steady through changing seasons, daily use, and years of operation.

In a student residence, comfort is shaped by more than layout and finishes. It also depends on how the building envelope performs day after day, especially in long winter months.

At Red Deer Polytechnic Residence, GlasCurtain’s fibreglass-framed Thermaframe 7 curtain wall system was chosen to help maintain more stable interior conditions, reduce heat loss, and improve comfort near the glass. In a building where students live, study, and recharge, those details influence comfort, consistency, and quality of life. High performance is not only about meeting a target, but also about creating spaces that feel consistent, supportive, and well resolved over time.

Thermal performance is often framed around glazing, but the frame plays just as critical a role in how a façade actually behaves.

Conventional aluminum framing allows heat to move more freely through the system, lowering interior surface temperatures and increasing the likelihood of condensation—especially in colder climates or buildings with higher interior humidity.

Fibreglass changes that equation.

With significantly lower thermal conductivity, fibreglass framing reduces heat transfer at the frame, helping maintain more consistent interior surface temperatures across the façade. That stability supports occupant comfort, limits condensation risk, and reduces the need for systems or maintenance strategies to compensate over time.

It’s a quieter part of the system, but it shapes how performance holds up in real conditions, day after day, season after season.
