Alberta is gathering public input on the Ardley Reservoir Scoping and Feasibility Study, which is assessing options to increase water storage on the Red Deer River.

The study is looking at whether a potential dam and reservoir near Ardley could support drought resilience, flood mitigation, irrigation, and municipal or industrial water supply. Current feasibility work includes technical and environmental review, with field activities such as geotechnical investigations, geophysical surveys, drone work, bathymetric surveys, and environmental field surveys.

For civil, geotechnical, and water resources teams, this is a useful Alberta infrastructure story that connects long-term water security with engineering feasibility and public engagement.

Incidents like this are a reminder that safety should account how people move through a space, what they can clearly see, and whether hazards are properly protected.

Openings, level changes, poolside areas, temporary covers, and transitions need to be designed and maintained so they are obvious, secure, and difficult to mistake for a walking surface. A small detail that gets overlooked can quickly become a serious safety issue.

Good design should account for real human behaviour, not just perfect use of a space.

Successful cities cannot be designed entirely from above. Engineers and planners provide the infrastructure, but the people using streets, parks, buildings and public spaces ultimately determine whether those places work. Community input is not separate from good city building.

Devon Hospital needed a canopy over an exterior stairwell where rain and snow accumulation on the steps was creating a hazard for people accessing the building. CVL was brought in to provide engineered drawings for the custom metal canopy. The design needed to help direct water and snow away from the stairs while tying into the existing concrete stairwell walls.

CVL completed the structural design and drawings for the stair canopy, including the steel framing, bolted sections, support legs, roof framing, and connection requirements. The canopy was designed with a roof slope to direct rain and snow toward the grass area instead of the stairs. CVL also supported the permit process and issued drawings for construction.

Alberta has launched a minister’s council to examine new ways municipalities can finance critical infrastructure for growing communities.

The council will bring together municipal leaders and industry representatives to look at alternative financing models, private-sector partnerships, and mechanisms used in other jurisdictions. The focus includes infrastructure that supports day-to-day growth, such as roads, water systems, transit, and other core municipal services.

For engineering and construction teams, the discussion is worth watching because infrastructure financing often shapes project timing, delivery models, and the ability of communities to keep up with housing and population growth. It is also directly relevant to the future pipeline of municipal work across Alberta.

Monaco’s harbour protection is an interesting example of coastal engineering in a highly constrained urban setting. Rather than acting as a simple wall, the structure functions as a breakwater, helping reduce wave energy before it reaches the harbour. This creates calmer conditions for vessels and protects the waterfront infrastructure around Port Hercule.

For projects like these, engineers have to consider water depth, wave action, navigation, constructability, long-term durability, and how the structure fits into an already dense coastline.

Alberta Social Housing Corp. (ASHC) retained CVL to provide consulting services for stucco and vinyl siding replacement at Parkside Manor and Heritage Manor in Claresholm. The project involved reviewing the existing building envelope conditions and preparing recommendations for replacement with new horizontal siding. The work also included associated flashing, window trim, door trim, soffit, and related exterior details.

CVL prepared the design, specifications, and construction tender documents for the siding replacement work. The scope included removing the existing stucco and vinyl siding, assessing the substrate sheathing and framing, installing a new weather-resistant barrier, and detailing flashing and trim to help prevent water infiltration. CVL also supported tender administration, construction administration, site review requirements, and quality control for the work.
