Alberta Energy Watch is up: three stories from this week, in plain language.

1. Winter Rules started October 15. Home electricity can't be fully disconnected until April 15, and natural gas protection starts November 1. The bill still comes due, so if you're behind, call your retailer now.
2. The Alberta Utilities Commission approved TransAlta's plan to rebuild the retired Keephills Unit 1 as an 829 MW natural gas plant, expected in service in late 2030.
3. Construction started on the 235 km Yellowhead natural gas pipeline into Alberta's Industrial Heartland, expected in service by late 2027.

Thank you to all of our customers who have been recommending us lately! 💙

Over the past few weeks, a lot of new customers have told us a friend, neighbour or family member sent them our way. For a local company like ours, that word of mouth means more than any ad ever could.

We appreciate you, and we'll keep working to earn it.

Alberta Energy Watch is up: three stories from this week, in plain language.

1. Edmonton City Council voted to raise the electricity franchise fee on EPCOR bills from 17.65% to 19.4% of distribution charges, starting January 1, 2027.
2. Canadian Utilities, the parent of ATCO Gas and ATCO Electric, agreed to merge with Emera. It still needs Alberta Utilities Commission approval.
3. Alberta stays on Alberta Time on November 1, so clocks won't fall back. Thermostats and block-heater timers that auto-adjust for daylight saving time may still try to.

Alberta Energy Watch — week of September 14, 2026.

Three things that moved on Alberta's grid this week: the Alberta Utilities Commission denied a 1,400 MW gas plant proposed at Olds for a data centre, AESO's 2026 Long-Term Outlook is grappling with how much power large loads will need, and a solar-plus-storage project near Stettler applied to connect to the transmission system.

We've written up each one in plain language, with what it actually means for your bill: https://getenergy.ca/alberta-energy-watch-september-18-2026/

The last long weekend of summer is in sight, and the bikes are still winning. 🚲

Backpacks, new shoes, hockey registration, the school supply list — the end of August adds up fast. It's a good time to look at the bills that quietly repeat every month too.

Our rates are on our site, plainly listed, no teaser pricing that jumps after a few months. If you've never checked what you're actually paying for power and gas, it takes about two minutes.

Enjoy the last stretch of sunshine, Alberta. The helmets stay on. 🦖

Heads up for Calgary natural gas customers: a line item on your bill is changing.

The Municipal Franchise Fee (MFF) is a charge set by The City of Calgary and collected on natural gas bills by whichever retailer you're with. Part of it is calculated using a fixed rate the City sets.

What's changing: that fixed rate goes from $3.15/GJ to $5.67/GJ effective January 1, 2027. In practice, the fee portion moves from roughly $0.35/GJ to about $0.63/GJ, on top of the cost of the gas itself.

Who it affects most: commercial and industrial customers located inside Calgary's franchise fee area.

This is a municipal charge, not a retailer charge, so it applies no matter who supplies your gas. We're sharing it because it's worth being aware of before it shows up on a bill in 2027.

If you're a business in the franchise fee area and want to share your view with the City, they've asked for comments at [email protected] on or before August 25, 2026.

Questions about what the lines on your gas bill actually mean? We're always happy to walk through it.
