Alberta's Industrial Heartland Association

Alberta's Industrial Heartland Association Alberta’s Industrial Heartland is a globally significant industrial cluster at the intersection of economic resiliency and environmental leadership.

We are Canada's largest hydrocarbon processing region. Located directly northeast of Alberta’s capital city, Edmonton, this 582 square kilometer region is home to more than 40 world class companies with a combined investment of over $45 billion. The Heartland has expanded from a single company in the 1950’s to Canada’s largest hydrocarbon processing region, employing over 7,000 people. Alberta's I

ndustrial Heartland is guided by a non profit association of municipalities dedicated toward sustainable eco-industrial development. Alberta's Industrial Heartland Association (AIHA) was created in 1998 by the municipalities within the geographic area of Alberta's Industrial Heartland, including the City of Fort Saskatchewan, and the Counties of Lamont, Strathcona and Sturgeon. In 2010, the City of Edmonton became the fifth official municipal partner. A leading principal of AIHA is promoting responsible development within the region. This includes ensuring the region is ready for development in its infrastructure, services, and land use zoning principles. AIHA recognizes that activities in the area can have a major impact on neighboring communities and affect their service delivery as well. Together, the municipalities take a proactive and cooperative approach to planning and industrial development.

🚂 Behind every major infrastructure investment are people working to solve challenges, create opportunities, and strengthen connections between producers and global markets.

Keyera, AltaGas, and CN recently announced plans to advance the ACE Rail Terminal Project in Alberta's Industrial Heartland. The project will create new export capacity, strengthen Canada's energy supply chain, and connect our region more efficiently to west coast export facilities.

While the investment and infrastructure are significant, it's the people behind the project who make progress possible. Every partnership agreement, construction milestone, and future shipment begins with individuals committed to finding solutions and creating opportunities. Your work is helping strengthen Canada's energy supply chain, expand market access, and reinforce Alberta's Industrial Heartland as a globally competitive industrial region.

Projects like ACE reinforce our region's role as a strategic hub for energy processing, transportation, and export. They support economic growth, enhance competitiveness, and create the infrastructure needed to connect Canadian products with customers around the world.

To the many individuals helping bring this project forward: thank you. Your expertise, collaboration, and dedication are helping build the connections that will support Canadian industry and trade for years to come.

We are proud to announce that former Canadian Ambassador to the United States, Kirsten Hillman, will serve as keynote speaker at the 2026 AIHA Conference on Thursday, Sept. 10 at the Edmonton Convention Centre.

In one of her first public speaking engagements since leaving the role earlier this year, Hillman will provide insights into global trade, geopolitical volatility and the evolving Canada-U.S. relationship.

Hillman’s tenure spanned three U.S. administrations, including President Donald Trump, two Canadian governments and the COVID-19 pandemic, placing her at the centre of some of the most consequential economic and geopolitical discussions affecting North America.

Tickets and tables of 10 go on sale Monday, June 22 at the AIHA Conference website: https://aihaconference.com/

Thank you to the Edmonton Chamber of Commerce for joining us for a tour of Alberta's Industrial Heartland last week alongside Edmonton Mayor Andrew Knack and AIHA Chair and Fort Saskatchewan Mayor Lisa Makin.

It was a pleasure to showcase the industries, infrastructure, partnerships and people that have helped make our region the highest performing chemical and energy industrial cluster in the world.

From attracting more than $50 billion in capital investment to supporting thousands of jobs across the region, the Heartland's success is built on collaboration—between industry, municipalities, governments, and organizations like Chambers of Commerce that help champion economic growth and competitiveness.

We're grateful for the opportunity to share the story of the Heartland and the people who play a key role in driving investment, innovation, and prosperity for this region, Alberta, and Canada.

A big thank you to the organizers of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) Annual Conference and Trade Show, and to the City of Edmonton for hosting this year’s event. We are proud to support the conference as a Host City Sponsor.

We’re also grateful for the opportunity to welcome delegates this Saturday on our Study Tour: "Partnerships that Power Progress: Municipal Collaboration and Clean Innovation."

This windshield tour offers a firsthand look at Alberta’s Industrial Heartland, the world’s highest performing chemicals and energy industrial cluster and home to more than 40 companies and approximately $50 billion in capital investment. Located a short drive northeast of Edmonton, the region plays a vital role in regional trade, manufacturing, energy development, and North American supply chains.

Along the way, delegates will learn how collaboration between municipalities, industry, and non-profit organizations helped drive growth across the region, including advancing world-class carbon capture and storage initiatives that are supporting industrial decarbonization and lower-carbon growth.

We look forward to sharing our region’s story and connecting with municipal leaders from across Canada throughout the week.

If you haven’t yet registered for a study tour, we'd be delighted to have you join us. Walk-ons are welcome, space permitting.

An important look in the Canadian Mining Journal on the growing role Alberta's Industrial Heartland could play in Canada's evolving critical minerals landscape. Thank you to Diane Cook for taking the time to tell this broader story, and to the companies helping move these projects forward.

What stands out is not just the projects themselves, but how much this builds on infrastructure and industrial capability that's been developed here over decades. From refining expertise to logistics, utilities, workforce, and integrated industrial operations — these things matter, and they take a long time to build.

Worth a read for the evolving picture:

Canada is ramping up its mineral processing hubs to strengthen North America’s critical strategic minerals (CSM) supply chain, which is of great […]

Thank you to Tara McCarthy and CBC Edmonton AM for having our Executive Director, Mark Plamondon, on Friday to discuss the global ripple effects of the U.S. and Israel’s conflict with Iran on petrochemical supply chains—and what it means for Alberta.

The conversation explored the sharp rise in plastics prices since the conflict began and the broader implications for industries and consumers worldwide. It also highlighted the strategic importance of our region as Canada's petrochemical hub, and the role the companies in our chemicals and energy cluster play in providing stable, reliable supply in an increasingly volatile global market.

At the Canadian Hydrogen Convention 2026 in Edmonton today, we joined the Edmonton Region Hydrogen Hub, Edmonton Global, and Kawasaki Heavy Industries in signing an MOU to explore a potential liquefied hydrogen supply chain.

Thanks to our partners for the collaboration and the straightforward conversations that led to this point.

This is a practical next step in a longer set of discussions about whether and how liquid hydrogen could move through a Canadian supply chain and connect to export markets like Japan.

We bring the fundamentals needed for these conversations: Large-scale industrial infrastructure, low-cost feedstock, carbon management capacity, and more than $50B in existing investments across Alberta’s Industrial Heartland.

Moving forward, the work will focus on detailed studies of a potential liquefied hydrogen supply chain in Canada, while also bringing in additional companies, researchers, and government and public-sector partners. The aim is to better understand what a full value chain could look like, from production and transportation through to storage and end use.
