Threats don’t distinguish between the physical and digital worlds. So why should security?

At the PST Cybersecurity Summit 2026, Joe Martinez, Executive Vice President & Chief Security Officer at Scotiabank, explored why modern organizations need to rethink security as one connected ecosystem.

In his presentation, “Connected Threats Demand Connected Security,” Joe discusses the increasingly blurred boundaries between physical security and cybersecurity, the growing influence of AI, and why an integrated security model is becoming essential to protecting modern enterprises.

He also explores the evolving role of the Chief Security Officer in Canada and what integrated security means for resilience, customer trust, and an organization’s ability to anticipate and respond to emerging risks.

🍁Federal investment supports cybersecurity collaboration and innovation in Atlantic Canada🍁

We’re pleased to share that the Government of Canada, through the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA - APECA), provided $50,000 in non-repayable support to the Canadian Institute for Cybersecurity (CIC) at the University of New Brunswick to support the PST Cybersecurity Summit 2026.

Held on August 20 in Fredericton, the Summit brought together leaders and experts from government, industry, academia, and research to exchange ideas and perspectives on some of the most pressing issues shaping our digital future.

This investment helped create a space for conversations around cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, emerging threats, cyber resilience, and digital trust, while strengthening connections across Canada's cybersecurity ecosystem.

Support for initiatives like the PST Cybersecurity Summit helps bring research and industry closer together, create opportunities for collaboration, and strengthen cybersecurity capacity and innovation here in New Brunswick and across Atlantic Canada.

As the Director of the Canadian Institute for Cybersecurity (CIC), a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Cybersecurity, and a professor at the University of New Brunswick, Dr. Ghorbani has dedicated his career to advancing cybersecurity research, innovation, education, and international collaboration. Every great team is built by people with different experiences, different expertise, and different stories 👥

This month, we're excited to welcome three new members to the Canadian Institute for Cybersecurity (CIC), each bringing a unique perspective to our growing community.

🍁 Meet Kate
After more than 25 years of living and working in cities across Canada, Kate returned to Fredericton and joined the University of New Brunswick's Faculty of Computer Science. With over two decades of administrative experience, she has supported teams, coordinated operations, and built lasting professional relationships. Throughout her career, one thing has remained constant: her passion for working with people. She now brings that same dedication, adaptability, and people-first approach to CIC.

🌍 Meet Mohamad
What began as an interest in technology evolved into a career dedicated to solving complex cybersecurity challenges. Mohamad's journey took him from Lebanon to Montréal, where he earned his Ph.D. in Software Engineering and continued his work as a Research Associate at ÉTS. Today, as a Research Scientist at CIC, he focuses on malware analysis, cyber threat intelligence, and AI-driven security—turning research into practical solutions that help strengthen cybersecurity for organizations and communities.

🌏 Meet Hamza
Originally from Pakistan, Hamza recently completed his Master of Engineering in Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of New Brunswick. Before moving to Canada, he worked as a Systems Engineer, developing expertise in cloud platforms, virtualization, Linux administration, automation, and network operations. At CIC, he looks forward to contributing to secure and reliable IT infrastructure while continuing to learn, grow, and support meaningful cybersecurity research.

Although their journeys began in different places and their expertise spans research, operations, and technology, they all share a common goal: contributing to a stronger, more innovative cybersecurity community.
At CIC, we know that our greatest strength comes from the people behind our mission. Every new colleague brings fresh ideas, valuable experience, and a unique perspective that helps us continue advancing cybersecurity research, innovation, and collaboration.

It was a pleasure to welcome Dr. Kathy Wilson, Acting President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of New Brunswick, to the Canadian Institute for Cybersecurity (CIC). The visit provided an opportunity to showcase CIC’s ongoing research, innovation, and impact in advancing cybersecurity.
We sincerely thank Dr. Wilson taking the time to visit CIC and engage with our researchers and team. Her interest and support are important in promoting the Institute and strengthening UNB’s cybersecurity leadership and visibility among government, industry, and other key partners.
