From a small village on Cuba’s Caribbean coast to Nigeria’s cybersecurity research community, two very different journeys have led to the same destination: CIC.

This week, we’re excited to welcome Alejandro Gerones and Emmanuel to our team! 🎉

🌎 Alejandro’s passion for teaching began at a young age and eventually brought him to Canada, where he built a career spanning education, technology, international collaboration, and professional training. His journey is a reminder that following your passion can take you farther than you ever imagined.

🌍 Emmanuel joins CIC with a strong academic and research background in Computer Science, holding a Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Ph.D. focused on cybersecurity and related fields. His expertise includes artificial intelligence, machine learning, vulnerability management, and intrusion detection systems, with a focus on developing practical solutions to today’s cybersecurity challenges.

While their stories are different, they share something important: a commitment to learning, innovation, and making a positive impact.

At CIC, we believe that diverse experiences and perspectives make us stronger—and we're proud to have talented people from around the world contributing to cybersecurity research and innovation right here in Canada.

Please join us in giving Alejandro and Emmanuel a warm welcome! 👏

Cybersecurity affects all of us — from the apps we use every day to the organisations and services we rely on.

Last week, the Canadian Institute for Cybersecurity (CIC) at the University of New Brunswick celebrated the first year of the Cyber Attribution Data Centre (CADC). The event showcased how CIC researchers and experts are working to better understand cyberattacks, investigate digital threats, and strengthen Canada’s cybersecurity future.

Guests had the opportunity to learn more about how cyber threats are analyzed, how attacker behaviour is investigated, and how technologies like artificial intelligence are being used to support cybersecurity research and innovation.

A big thank you to everyone who joined us for this milestone event and helped make it a success.

“Battles are not only won by firing bullets. Cyber operations and cybersecurity can also win them.” Ali A. Ghorbani

As cyber warfare becomes a core instrument of national power, the Canadian Institute for Cybersecurity (CIC) at UNB is helping shape Canada’s cyber defence future through cutting-edge research, cyber intelligence, and workforce development.

A recent UNB News feature highlights how CIC and the federally funded Cyber Attribution Data Centre (CADC) are advancing Canada’s ability to:

✅ Analyze and reverse-engineer real cyberattacks
✅Track adversarial tactics and cyber threat behaviour
✅ Protect critical infrastructure like power grids, transportation systems, and municipalities
✅Prepare for emerging threats including post-quantum cybersecurity, misinformation, and human-centric cyber risks.

One of the most striking takeaways from the article is the reminder that modern warfare is no longer limited to physical battlefields. Cyber operations now influence national defence, intelligence, public trust, and even everyday civilian systems.

⚠️ The article also emphasizes a major challenge facing Canada today:
Many municipalities and SMEs remain highly vulnerable to cyber threats due to limited cybersecurity capacity and resources. Founded in 2017 as Canada’s first cybersecurity institute, CIC continues to grow as a national leader in cybersecurity research, training, and innovation — helping bridge academia, government, and industry to strengthen Canada’s digital resilience.
