Meet Fraser Defoe, our Operations Manager at Weld FX.

Fraser brings 20 years of welding experience in oil and gas construction, maintenance, and pipe fabrication to the team. That depth of industry experience supports the day-to-day coordination behind the work happening in our shop and in the field.

As Operations Manager, Fraser is part of the team helping keep projects moving and supporting the work our customers rely on us to complete.

There is something pretty special about seeing 48 welding machine stands we built now sitting in their new home, ready for the next generation of welders.

Weld FX designed, fabricated, and donated all 48 stands for the new welding booths at Northwestern Polytechnic's new Grande Prairie facility. They are part of a larger group of donations Weld FX is making to NWP.

Because the welding booths use two different welding machine combinations, our team designed two styles of stands to accommodate the different setups. We then cut, formed, fitted, and welded every stand in house at our Grande Prairie shop.

From the initial drawings and individual pieces through fabrication and installation, all 48 stands are now in place in their new home at NWP.

For us, this project is about more than what we fabricated. These stands will be used by students learning their trade and developing skills that can lead to careers in welding.

We are proud that something built by our team will play a small part in supporting skilled trades education right here in Grande Prairie.

Carbon steel, stainless steel, or aluminum?

The right material depends on what you are building, and at Weld FX, we fabricate with all three.

Across our shop, you will see these materials taking shape in different ways. Our fabrication capabilities include CNC plasma cutting, brake press forming, plate rolling, tube and pipe bending, structural profile rolling, welding, and fabrication.

Carbon steel is part of our structural fabrication work, while stainless steel is used in custom fabricated components such as wastegate piping. Our aluminum capabilities support structural components and custom industrial assemblies.

What makes this interesting is seeing how differently each project can come together depending on the material, application, and fabrication required.

Take a look around our shop and you might see carbon steel being formed, stainless components being fabricated, and aluminum taking shape for an entirely different application.

Different materials require different approaches, but the goal remains the same. We build components that fit the application and meet the needs of the project.

Emissions upgrades often involve more than adding one new component to an engine.

Existing equipment may need to be modified so the new systems can be properly incorporated into the application. That is where the fabrication work behind the upgrade becomes important.

At Weld FX, our emissions-related work includes intake and exhaust upgrades tailored for Waukesha 7044GSI conversions and 9390 Series 4 and 5 engines. We also fabricate and install seal pot systems for sweet and sour gas applications.

The projects shown here give you a closer look at some of that work, including catalyst access, exhaust catalyst installations, wastegate piping, emissions test ports, and AFR crossover piping.

We also fabricate solar power skids and mounts, including solar-powered chemical pump skids for remote locations. These systems can eliminate the need to rely on natural gas for the chemical pump, providing another option for operators looking at how their sites are powered.

As emissions requirements and equipment needs continue to change, existing facilities often need custom solutions to make new technology work with what is already in place.

That is the role Weld FX is equipped to support. We fabricate and install the mechanical components and modifications needed to help bring these upgrades together.

If you think our plasma table is cool, you should see what we have on the way.

This video shows our current CNC plasma table at work, cutting material in our Grande Prairie fabrication shop. It has been an important part of our fabrication capabilities, but in a few months, it will make way for our next investment in advanced manufacturing.

While attending FABTECH in Toronto, Weld FX purchased a new 12 kW fibre laser cutting system. Once installed, the new laser table will replace our current plasma table and significantly expand our cutting and manufacturing capabilities.

The photos from FABTECH give you a sneak peek at the equipment that is coming next.

Investing in new technology is part of how Weld FX continues to evolve from a welding shop into a modern manufacturing and fabrication company. We are expanding what we can do in-house and preparing our shop for the types of projects our customers will need from us in the years ahead.
