CMD Prototyping

CMD Prototyping Startup company for CAD, 3D Modelling, Concept Development and Rapid Prototyping. We're here to help bring the next big idea to life. That’s where we can help!

CMD prototyping is a company passionate about bringing the incredible innovative capacity of Canadians to the world's stage. We know that, for most people and businesses, it is totally impractical to learn ALL the skills required to create a product. A great idea, a solution to a unique problem, can come from anybody and not all of these innovators will happen to be in the right field to bring tha

t idea to life. Working out of the NORCAT Commons & the Fortin Discovery Lab, CMD Prototyping is a business founded on exactly these types of situations. Founded by three mechanical engineering graduates with specialization in mechatronics, CMD Prototyping relies on these abilities coupled with the incredible resources at the Fortin Discovery Lab to tackle the innovative projects of our clients. Residing in the NORCAT Commons also gives us a unique network of brilliant minds and services that we can call upon to help fully realize your creations. CMD Prototyping is currently made up of the three founding members: Jorden Colwell, Joshua Martin, and Daryl Dominique, as well as soon-to-graduate Mathematics student Aaron Ferguson. Our goal is to play a small, but important part in the process of creating products that contribute to the innovative and technological legacy of our home in Canada's "Great White North".

The Sudbury Game Design Challenge starts tomorrow!

The talented winners get to take this most recent build of ours home as a trophy... We're quite fond of it.

Best of luck to all competitors!

How's this for an interesting one?

A few weeks ago the Fortin Discovery Lab had the opportunity to participate in ! AdvanceWorx was tasked with creating a social application to share thermal data in response to the music & party, and we were tasked with ensuring that taking the thermal videos would not result in the breakage of any iPads.

As a result, here's the whole setup at the Beach Club in Montreal!
..Now if only we'd also been able to attend the party...

A while ago we shared a story that we were incredibly proud of. We were able to be part of a community effort to design, test and build a local Para-Nordic skier a custom sit ski in just one month to get him proper equipment for the IPC World Cup in Finsterau, Germany.

Now it once again brings us great pride to bring you the results of the event:

Placing 9th in the 15km race in his very first World Cup and beating his own personal best as well as being the fastest Canadian to participate, we couldn't be more thrilled with the results of this project and with the incredible effort put in by Collin.

Once again, it's impossible to thank the other organizations and individuals involved in this project enough. Laurentian Para-Nordic and Cross Country Ontario for making the whole thing possible, Patti Kitler for being a coach to Collin and really pushing the initiative to get this Sit-Ski made and to Luc Soenens for performing the bending and welding in an absurdly small time-frame. It's been an absolute honour to be a part of this, and we truly wish Collin the best in his future events.

March 14th, or 3.14, is Pi Day! A day the mathematical enthusiasts among us like to throw a little party in honor of our favorite irrational number (sorry e and phi). 3D printing a bunch of Pi memorabilia seems like a great idea, so 3Dprint.com has put together a pretty cool collection. Check out the link below for Pi rings, pencil holders, cookie cutters, and more!

On the 19th of January, we were approached for a rather interesting job. An extremely promising local Para-Nordic skier by the name of Collin Cameron and his coach Patti Kitler asked us to help design and build a custom sit ski for Collin, as his progress was fast outpacing his existing equipment. The catch was that he flew out to Germany for a race on February 18th and needed it before then.

What followed was a chaos of community members all trying to get this together by the deadline. Going from concept, frame design, extensive software testing, manufacturing drawing, material sourcing and eventually actually building to finally result in the completed product only a few days before deadline.

We are incredibly proud to have been part of this process and we'd like to formally wish Collin & Patti the absolute best of luck in Germany and onwards and we certainly hope that his new sit ski serves him well.

We'd also like to publicly thank Luc Soenens for performing the tricky aluminum welding, pipe bending and general assembly in absolute record time as well as Laurentian Para-Nordic and Cross Country Ontario, as it was these two organizations that made this even remotely possible.

Please join us in wishing Collin the best of luck!

Some 3D prints just turn out really cool...

This print for Carriere Industrial Supply is a scale model of one of their real products; a mechanical bucket approximately the size of a small house. We had to scale it down substantially, but over 100 hours of printing later we're able to give them a beautiful model with various removable components to show off their product in a far more portable fashion.

Further information on Carriere and the incredible things they build can be found at their website: http://www.carriereindustrial.com/

We get a lot of interesting things coming through the Fortin Discovery Lab, but every now and then there's something really incredible. Last week we printed a hand splint that allowed a disabled guitarist to play again pain-free! Ronnie Theiss of Theiss Automation developed the 3D printable part. The cast was developed initially by making a mould of the guitarist's hand, and then went high-tech, using one of Fortin Discovery Lab's 3D scanners. These scans were modified to provide support and structure where it was needed, and allow as natural playing as possible. All that was left was the printing and the playing! Check out a few pictures below!

We want to give a big shout out and thank you to the Sudbury Game Design Challenge! The 48h challenge was organized by our good friend Mike Daoust and sponsored by Fuel Multimedia, AdvanceWorx, FLIR Systems and NORCAT. A few of our members competed and had a ton of fun.

The event's theme was "Lightning Games" referring to games that can be played in very fast rounds. We worked on an iPhone app that worked with FLIR's amazing thermal cameras. Our idea was a game that challenged players to accurately recreate artwork with thermal signatures.

So that's it. We're done! And what a weekend it was.

We are seriously and literally in awe of the sheer amount of creativity that got packed into our event! Every single one of you competitors was amazing and you should promptly pat yourself on the back because we couldn't have asked for a better group of developers.

One last order of business before we leave you fine people to your mental recovery: In our caffeine fueled fever-dream like haste to keep the gears of the SGDC turning we, unfortunately, forgot to thank one of our most critical sponsors. So please let us take the time right here to thank Fuel Multimedia for their support

In addition to the $2500 in marketing services that they heroically provided for the grand prize winners, Fuel also created the incredible posters for the event which found their way all across our fair city. And while we may not ever fully understand their obsession with Kimchi, we can safely say they played a huge role in the promotion and image of our event. So one last digital round of applause for those who made this event a reality.

We found an excellent article on using 3D printing in teaching today, and knew you'd want to see it! Giving a student the ability to see their imagination and problem-solving brought into reality is something truly awesome.

The author, Nicholas Provenzano says "I have watched my students work on fun and crazy projects over the past few weeks and the things they are creating are amazing."

He calls 3D printing "a chance to learn about design, shapes, the physics of building items, geometry, measurements, and so much more."
