It’s that time of year again! Best thing you can do to help your AC? Change the furnace filter!
A clogged filter is one of the main causes of Air Conditioner breakdowns, and damage to the furnace and AC systems.

Is your AC still struggling? Try these:

- first - make sure all windows are closed
- then make sure floor vents aren’t covered by furniture etc.
- make sure floor vents are *open* in the hottest rooms and closed in the coldest rooms like the basement
- make sure bathroom and bedroom doors are kept open to improve airflow
- change the thermostat fan setting to circulate if possible - or *on* if circulate is not an option
- make sure the return air vents are clean (those are the large-ish vents usually on the walls that draw air to the furnace instead of blowing air)
- temporally turn on the bathroom exhaust fans on the uppermost floors of the home for a few hours
- avoid cooking with the stove and drying laundry with the dryer on extremely hot days
- family gatherings will increase the humidity and heat of the home - be patient with your system

AC systems require periodic professional maintenance. We can check things out for you, check the health of the system and top up refrigerant if necessary. Would you like us to visit? Email us to setup an appointment [email protected] or call us at 905-309-9074

COLD WEATHER TIPS to keep your Furnace running smoothly
1. ***Make sure your furnace filter has been changed recently
2. ***Make sure your exterior furnace vents are clear of snow
3. ***Make sure your interior heat vents and return air ducts are not blocked by furniture or other items. Good air flow is key to maintaining a balanced home temperature.
4. Remember that with extreme drops in temperature, it will likely take longer for your home to get up to your preferred temperature, especially if your thermostat is set to drop the temperature for sleeping at night.
5. With extreme drops in temperature, humidity could temporarily condensate on your windows. You can check or reduce the humidity settings on your humidifier to reduce the humidity to less than 40%, but over the busy holidays, excess humidity can also come from cooking and even guests. As your home returns to its normal routines, the humidity should also return to normal levels. Good air flow is necessary for keeping windows free of condensation.

Thank you to our friends at Premium Home Services Inc. for providing us with these helpful tips for your homes' winter maintenance:

- Checking, changing or cleaning air (furnance/ERV) filters is always a good idea at the change of seasons. This will extend furnace life, reduce energy bills and improve indoor air quality while helping your HVAC system run more efficiently.

- Maintenance isn’t really needed in a home for a bit, but after a year or so, opting to schedule regular cleaning or maintenance of equipment by a professional is recommended.

- If you have a thermostat that runs on batteries, make sure to check levels or change them out for new.

- Gas fireplaces are often in use at this time of year. Speaking with your fireplace supplier and their techs may assist with some helpful tips or tricks on maintenance. Even cleaning the glass face of dirt and debris keeps items looks fresh and clean.

Beyond the HVAC system items above, items like draining hose bibs, testing fire alarms and reversing your fan rotation are all great ideas for helping to maintain your home.
