Congratulations to all the authors of this exciting case series published in JAVMA! https://lnkd.in/e24si2JB
This manuscript from Colorado State University reports on the effectiveness of eQcell's activated mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) in treating bacterial infections, including those caused by antibiotic-resistant bacteria. This report is aligned with a case report from the Ontario Veterinary College published in March (https://lnkd.in/eFZKfU27), which reported the survival and full recovery of a foal with severe septic osteomyelitis following the addition of activated MSCs to the treatment protocol.
Use of these cells in cases with naturally occurring infections is based on foundational research from Colorado State University, conducted by Drs. Steve Dow, Lynn Pezzanite, and Laurie Goodrich, which has shown that activated MSCs are more effective at treating infections than non-activated cells. These earlier studies utilized fresh MSCs. These case reports confirm that eQcell's off-the-shelf, ready-to-use, frozen cells have a significant clinical impact in challenging real-life cases.
A key advantage of these activated MSCs over other emerging antimicrobial therapies, such as bacteriophage therapy, is their broad applicability; MSCs are largely bacterial species agnostic, making them particularly suitable for culture-negative infections or those involving multiple bacterial species. The ability of MSCs to secrete enzymes that break down biofilms aids in their effectiveness against resistant infections.
