Scott Varo, welcome back to ALCOT PLASTICS!

Scott recently returned to the company as a shipping and receiving associate. He previously worked at ALCOT from 2020 to 2023, beginning in receiving before advancing to shipping lead.

In his new role, Scott helps keep warehouse operations moving by loading and unloading trailers, picking orders, and maintaining an organized warehouse. After spending several years in Edmonton, Scott is glad to reconnect with familiar faces and put his previous ALCOT experience to work once again.

One of the most overlooked components of a successful sealant joint isn't the sealant itself - it's what's underneath it.

Backer rods play a critical role in helping sealants perform as intended. By controlling joint depth, acting as a bond breaker, and promoting the proper hourglass-shaped sealant profile, they help joints accommodate movement while reducing stress on the sealant over time.

Also, not all backer rods are the same. Closed-cell backer rods are an excellent choice for uniform joints in applications like concrete, glazing, windows, and doors. For irregular or variable-width joints, soft backer rods offer greater compressibility and are designed to help eliminate concerns with gas entrapment or bubbling during sealant installation.

Whether it's a bridge expansion joint, a commercial façade, a log home, or a rooftop installation, selecting the right backer rod is an important part of creating a durable, long-lasting sealant joint. Sometimes, the products you never see are the ones doing some of the most important work.

Alcot Plastics is sad to share the passing of Otilia Alac, our namesake, last week at the age of 87.

When building a small family business, there is often a person working in the background who functions as the heartbeat of the operation. While her late husband and Alcot Plastics founder Jan was inventing and building groundbreaking polyethylene extrusion technology, Otilia was typing invoices, writing cheques, hiring staff, packing orders, and managing most of the other pieces that helped us grow to where we are today- all while raising three children and volunteering with the Czechoslovak Baptist Church.

Otilia remained a central figure at Alcot well beyond her retirement, often stopping by to have lunch with Jan and a quick visit with her friends in the office, always bringing treats for whoever was there. We are grateful for all of the contributions Otilia made to the success of Alcot Plastics, and share our condolences with all who knew and loved her.

Polyethylene (PE) foam is one of those materials that's easy to overlook; until you realize how many everyday products rely on it. From protective packaging and pipe insulation to backer rods and screening splines, selecting the right foam can make a noticeable difference in performance and longevity.

Here are a few considerations when specifying or sourcing PE foam:

• Think beyond cushioning. Closed-cell PE foam offers excellent moisture resistance, making it well suited for applications where water absorption or condensation is a concern.

• Density matters. The right density depends on the application. A packaging insert has very different performance requirements than pipe insulation or a construction product.
