Another way to lower a basement without sacrificing floor space is Underpinning the existing foundation. Underpinning is done in phases to maintain the structural integrity of the building while the foundation is being strengthened and extended downwards. By working on small, disconnected sections (typically 3 to 5 feet in length) the load of the house is safely redistributed to the remaining, undisturbed soil, preventing the structure from collapsing or settling unevenly. As you can see by the spray paint on the walls, this basement was underpinned in 3 phases. Each phase is dug out, reinforced with rebar, poured, and cured, before the next phase is started.
