Are you tired of spending a small fortune to heat your home during the long Southern Ontario winters? Below are actions you can do to save money and heat your home more efficiently this winter.

1) Passive solar heating. Utilize the low winter positioning of the sun to warm your home by opening curtains on south and west-facing windows during the day and removing solar shade screens until warmer weather returns

2) Don't forget pet doors. Drafts from a pet door can't be avoided entirely, but you can protect them with weather-stripping or even a heavy curtain on either side of the door. If your pet door is within a removable pane for sliding glass doors, be sure to weather-strip around it as well.

3) Perform regular maintenance on your home heating system(s). Efficiency is lost with poorly maintained units. Get standard service done and keep exhaust filters clean.

4) Avoid using exhaust fans. Running a bathroom or kitchen exhaust fan for one hour can deplete your home of its warm air. Minimize their use by not using them or turning them off as soon as possible.

5) Reverse your ceiling fans. Most, if not all, ceiling fans have a reverse setting for winter. By reversing your fan blades to rotate clockwise, you draw down the risen heat from the ceiling and prevent it from dissipating through the roof or walls.

Give us a call for emergency furnace repairs and for all of your preventative maintenance needs. Stay warm this winter with Bowes.

As the snow starts to fall in Southern Ontario, home heating tips are in order. We are checking in to see if you have prepared your heating system for winter.

It's essential to have a heater that works all season properly.

1. Replace your HVAC filter.
As a general rule, you should replace your HVAC filter every season.
2. Prepare your vents/registers.
We suggest dusting the vents or registers throughout your home before you use your heater.
3. Remove nearby objects.
Before you turn on your heater, remove any objects near your unit or on top of it.
4. Cover up your air conditioner.
If you have a traditional HVAC unit, buy a cover for your air conditioning condenser.
5. Turn up the thermostat.
Before using your heater regularly, please turn it on and test it to ensure it works properly.
6. Make a heating maintenance appointment.

It is a soggy start to the week. Fall is in full swing here in Southern Ontario.

You can prevent many plumbing problems by performing a few routine maintenance tasks before the first autumn freeze hits. To help you out, we have been sharing great fall plumbing tips for homeowners.

Today's tip is to drain your water heater.

Drain your water heater to prevent sediment buildup and rust. First, shut off the power and water supply valve. Then, carefully drain the tank by connecting a hose to the drain valve and running it to a nearby drain. This will help lengthen the life of your water heater. It will also enhance its heating efficiency, keeping your showers nice and hot!

If you have a sump pump, make sure it’s clean and in good working order. Pour a bucket of water on it and check to see that it turns on and pumps the water out. Call a professional plumber if it’s not working correctly or if you notice dampness or foul odours. Your sump pump is at lower risk for freezing if it’s well maintained and in good condition.

Fall maintenance time! 🍂 Let's discuss some Fall Plumbing tips.

Outdoor Faucets
After you remove the hose, check the faucet for any leaks or drips. If any of your outdoor faucets leak or drip, fall is the time to fix them. A leaking faucet can lead to water damage and severe plumbing issues during a freeze. Once your outdoor faucets are fully fixed, cover and insulate the faucets with a styrofoam insulation kit.

Fall is here! 🍂 Let's discuss some Fall Plumbing tips.

Outdoor Water Hoses
If your water hoses are left connected during colder temperatures, water inside the hoses can freeze and expand. This expansion can cause faucets and any connected pipes inside your home to freeze and break. To help prevent this, disconnect your water hoses, drain them of any remaining water, and store the hoses in a dry area.

Bathtub leaks. 🛀

Summer is the best time to check for leaks since a long winter can impact plumbing that we can’t even see, and you want a chance during warm weather to take care of any issues before it gets cold again.

See if the grout is all around the edge and securely sealed to the wall tile. Any tiny chip or missing portion of the grout enables water to leak into places it should not, like underneath the tub or onto and into the wall. Press on the shower wall tiles where they meet the bathtub and make sure nothing moves and the wall does not feel soft. If you detect loose tiles, it can be an indicator of an unseen water leak.

Give us a call if you are having trouble with a bathtub leak in your home. We can help!

Let's talk water pressure. 🌊

Did you know that the Household Water Pressure Stanard = 40 to 45 PSI? Maintaining good water pressure is even more critical with all the activities your shower, washer, and other utilities will see in the summer season. You can check and measure the household water pressure with a store-bought gauge that you attach to an outside spigot. Generally, the household standard is 40-45 pounds per square inch and should not exceed 60 psi.

Summer is a great time to check for leaks. You want a chance during warm weather to take care of any issues before it gets cold again.

Individually inspect each of the elements that use water inside and outside of your house: Faucets, pipes under the sink, showerheads, bathtub spigots, drinking water line, water softener, hot water heater, outdoor spigots, sprinklers, pool and more to see if they are in good working order. Look for rust, corrosion, leaks, broken or bent parts or other signs of trouble. Grab a bright flashlight to see underneath cabinets and in dark corners. It also helps to have a towel to wipe your hands and a few tissues to help you detect moisture.

If you discover a problem beyond your expertise, reach out to us. We can help!
