Over the last few months, a significant amount of my online presence has shifted toward teaching parametric workflows, guitar design, and building software around many of the same problems I’ve spent years running into.
That work led to a tool for making structure and design intent easier to understand.
It has since grown into something considerably larger.
A lot of the thinking behind it comes back to ideas I’ve been interested in for years.
As musicians, woodworkers, luthiers, and designers. Patterns, shapes, structure, and the relationships between the parts of a system. I believe that’s part of why so many of us are drawn to the crafts we find ourselves in: discovering the many levels within a form, and the wonder as questions become answers.
One question. One answer. Leading to another question, another answer, propagating into a network of understanding.
Hundreds of parameters allow an instrument to be born. That network of questions and answers, the decisions, lead to the understanding that other networks of questions, answers, and decisions are always in front of you; complex interdependencies, and abstractions to understand them better.
I find that fascinating.
What I’m building now doesn’t really represent a change in direction. It’s the same loop, question and answer, increasingly building different parts of the same system.
So there’s been a little less finished-guitar content lately, and a lot more software, diagrams, and technical nonsense.
But as the questions I’ve spent years working within become answered and tangible in code, Contriver Guitars increasingly finds its place under the Contriver Systems Inc. umbrella.
A child of the larger operation, with its own identity, thriving as part of the whole.
The fork is almost complete, and the separation between parent and child will become less ambiguous.
Gesture, motion, send, receive.
