Using your wood burning fireplace throughout the winter is a great way to stay cozy and warm, but it can quickly become a hazard if it hasn’t been cleaned and maintained properly. Here are our tips for using your fireplace safely:
Open the flue to look for and clean out buildup of soot. Fill any holes or cracks that you find.
Clean out the ashes from the fireplace whenever it reaches the bottom of the grate. Having a buildup of ashes can slow down and stop airflow in your fireplace.
Inspect all fire and carbon monoxide alarms in your home and garage to make sure they’re in good working order.
Make sure your fireplace is listed on your home insurance policy. Fireplaces come with their own risk and you want to make sure you’re protected in the event of an unexpected fire.

1 Single Stage Furnaces: are either on or off. They will run full blast until it reaches the desired temperature.

When you’re looking for extra warmth during the winter, it’s common to use a space heater. While they’re a great tool to warm up a space quickly, it’s important to be cautious when using one. Ensure you’re plugging it directly into a wall - not a power bar or extension cord. Keep it at least 3 feet away from curtains and furniture, and make sure you’re only using it when you’re in the room.
