Timber Restoration Services ensures the delivery of superior quality with minimal site impact through our Accelerated Bridge Construction Methodology. This process involves off-site prefabrication where the entire structure is fully machined, fabricated, and treated in a controlled environment. This approach ensures all design life criteria are met and eliminates "brightwood" exposure on site. Installation is completed rapidly using a single-pick lift operation by a crane, which confines the high-impact construction phase to a single scheduled window, significantly reducing onsite construction durations as well as community and environmental disruptions.

Earlier this year Timber Restoration Services successfully completed rehabilitation works on the near kilometre long Urangan Pier in Hervey Bay, Queensland, a region which draws approximately 1.4 million visitors annually. The contract's scope involved extensive timber replacement and rehabilitation across three parts: replacing severely deteriorated decking, kerbs, handrails, and bracing, as well as reactive replacement of girders and corbels. To manage the pier's 5T load capacity and maintain continuous public access, innovative solutions were employed, including using a lightweight 3-tonne spider crane for heavy lifts and a Polaris ATV and trailer for safe material transport along the pier. The project was completed safely and efficiently, successfully restoring this vital structure.

The unique design of the Bon Accord Bridge lies in its stress-laminated glulam timber superstructure, which provides a lightweight, resilient, and low-profile replacement for the flood-damaged original. This 10-span structure was designed to achieve a 100-year design life by utilizing glued-laminated (glulam) girders and caps that were pre-machined, pre-assembled, and treated with an oil-based preservative for enhanced durability. The project successfully reused the existing foundations while upgrading the substructure to support T44 truck loads, demonstrating an efficient and sustainable approach to critical infrastructure rehabilitation in a flood-prone region.

In February 2022, the Wide Bay-Burnett region suffered its worst flooding in over 100 years. The Bon Accord Bridge, an existing 10 span timber bridge, suffered irreparable damage and was closed, disconnecting the community with a lengthy detour.
In 2024 Timber Restoration Services carried out the design and construction of a suitable replacement which reused the existing foundations to support a lightweight, resilient and low-profile structure with a 100-year design life. Together with a dedicated team of local subcontractors, TRS installed stress-laminated glulam bridge units across the 10 spans in just under 3 months. Approach works and reinforced aprons were installed following the completion of the bridge works ready for the reopening in January 2025. Thanks to all who assisted in making this project so successful.

Talk about an in quick bridge solution! Over the last decade, Timber Restoration Services has completed over 100 bridge projects with exterior grade glue-laminated (glulam) timber all over Australia. The Evered Road #2 Bridge in Far North Queensland is the latest bridge project TRS has delivered, installed last month in a single day shift. From demolition to deck installation, this prefabricated bridge system is designed, pre-assembled and treated off site, resulting in fast install times and minimal disruption to the community. The Evered Road #2 Bridge is the perfect example of modern timber bridge construction using mass timber coupled with design details that are certified to last 100 years.

In October '24, Timber Restoration Services (TRS) completed the Walker Finns Bridge (Palm Tree Creek) replacement. This project was a collaborative effort with local subcontractors Razor Demolition, Seaforth Civil, and CJD Investments.

The tendered design, much like the old structure, featured two side girders with vertical through bolts along with steel UB diaphragm beams and substructure supports; common details that are detrimental to a timber structure’s longevity.

TRS proposed an alternative solution which featured a new concrete foundation securely anchored to the bedrock, supporting a prefabricated hardwood substructure and superstructure, all fastened together with modern horizontal connections. The deck and kerb system incorporated Mackay Council’s Mass Plywood Panels inventory in combination with TRS supplied exterior grade Glulam Panels. Rip rap was installed for scour protection and a bypass for the locals was maintained, providing minimal disruption to the community throughout the build.

This was another successful project, and we appreciate the opportunity to work with a dedicated team within the Mackay Region.

Barren Creek bridge was closed due to degradation of its girders and plywood panel deck. Through bolt vertical connectors had allowed moisture to pe*****te and decay the structural elements.

Timber Restoration Services (TRS) was contracted to refurbish the bridge with a focus on modern timber bridge construction details. Wood Research and Development (WRD) was commissioned to design a renewed superstructure and restored substructure to a T44 bridge loading specification affording a 100 year design life.

The construction was undertaken by TRS using RetrowrapTM, a high strength glass fibre reinforcement product, modern pile posting techniques, H5 treated Durability Class 1 hardwood log girders and a preservative treated glulam deck and kerb system which offered a long life with minimal maintenance for Mackay Regional Council.

Thanks to our partners for your continued support and assistance throughout this project.
