Qikiqtaaluk Horizon Arctic Services (QHAS) - a joint venture between Qikiqtaaluk Corporation and Horizon Naval Engineering is delivering the Polar Class Icebreaker Nordica to operate in Canadian Arctic waters this season, working alongside the Canadian Coast Guard.

This is the first partnership of its kind between an Inuit-led company and the Canadian Coast Guard, adding critical heavy icebreaking capacity at a time when Arctic shipping, investment, and community growth across Inuit Nunangat are all accelerating.

"This partnership demonstrates what is possible when Inuit leadership, industry expertise, and Canadian capability come together," said Harry Flaherty, President and CEO of Qikiqtaaluk Corporation.

Proud to see Inuit leadership shaping Canada's Arctic maritime future.

Qikiqtaaluk Corporation is honoured to be featured in the BMO Financial Group’s 2026 Indigenous Partnerships and Progress Report.

The feature “Where Capacity Meets the Catch” tells the story of a deliberate, long-planned transition for Qikiqtaaluk Fisheries Corporation (QFC), a QC subsidiary. Our new offshore trawler, Saputi II, will introduce advanced processing systems, expanded on-board capacity, and updated technologies that change how work is carried out at sea.

The guiding principle is simple: the value created offshore should return home. As Peter Keenainak, Vice-President of Qikiqtaaluk Corporation, puts it, “There are two ways people benefit. One is directly, through the work on the vessel. The other is through the company, and what it returns to the Inuit of the region.”

As the birthright development corporation for the more than 16,000 Inuit of the Qikiqtani Region, our responsibility is clear: align fishing access, vessel capability, and skilled people so that the value created offshore returns home.

Thank you to BMO for walking this path alongside us.
