Walk through any production shop and the tools doing the most work are usually the ones nobody points at.

Jigs and fixtures. They hold the part, keep it square, and make sure number four hundred comes out looking like number one.

The usual approach is to machine them from aluminum. Nothing wrong with that, except every time the design moves you start over.

Printing them loosens that up. You can model the fixture around the exact part it has to hold, run it in tough nylon, and change it whenever the process changes. It is lighter in the hand as well, which the person using it every shift notices long before anyone else does.

Where it gets really useful is with older gear. No drawings, no files, just a worn part that still has to be held perfectly. So we scan it. Then the fixture fits the real thing, casting quirks and all.

None of this tooling ever leaves the floor. It just makes sure everything that does leave is right.

Chrome is beautiful in person, but it is a nightmare to 3D scan.

All that shine bounces the scanner's light everywhere, which leaves gaps and noise in the data. So before scanning, we coat the part in a vanishing scanning spray. The mirror finish goes flat white just long enough to capture every surface properly, and then the coating evaporates on its own. No cleanup, no residue, no harm done.

Sometimes you have to dull a part down to capture it perfectly.

3D scanning creates a permanent digital twin of an artifact. Every carving mark, crack, and worn edge is captured with millions of measurement points. The process is completely non-contact, so fragile pieces are never touched.

Museums, families, and collectors use these digital twins to archive, study, restore, and reproduce pieces that would otherwise slowly disappear.

A color-coded inspection map compares a scanned part against its CAD model. Green is on spec. Red and blue show exactly where the surface drifts from the design.

It beats checking a few points with hand tools. The entire surface gets measured, so nothing hides between the checkpoints.

Ever wonder why engineers print a part before they machine it or mold it?

Machining setups and injection molds are a big commitment. Once you cut steel, changing the design means cutting steel again. FDM printing flips that. A part goes from CAD file to workbench with no tooling at all, printed in real thermoplastics you can actually test.

Check the fit. Try the assembly. Find the flaws. Fix them and print again. When the design proves itself, you move to machining or molding with confidence instead of guesswork.

FDM is not perfect. Layer lines show, tolerances are looser than machined parts, and strength varies with print direction. But as a first step in product development, it is hard to beat.

Why do SLS 3D printed parts come out buried in powder? Because the powder is the support structure.

The unsintered nylon surrounds the part while it builds, holding every feature in place. The leftover powder is recycled into the next run.

The result is a tough, functional nylon part with clean surfaces on every side.

When an engine part is no longer made, the worn original becomes the blueprint for a new one.

When no drawings exist, the part itself holds every dimension we need. We scan it with our Artec 3D scanners, capture its exact geometry, and rebuild it as a fully editable solid model, recreated as if it had been engineered from scratch. A worn, corroded original comes back as a clean new part, stronger than before. Reverse engineering turns a part you can no longer buy into one you can build again.
