Our goal is to use science and engineering to create a more sustainable environment on campus and throughout the Okanagan. Our current and prospective projects include solar benches on campus, improving food and e-waste collection, making reusable wrapping/bags, and solar panels for EV charging. If you have new project ideas or want to participate in any of the above, please send us a message as we would be happy to have you join us!

Sorting Game!!

One of our teams, Campus Waste Initiatives will hold the SORTING game in EME first Floor this Tuesday (Jan 31) and Thursday (Feb 2) from 12:00 - 2:00 PM.

Come to get involved and learn how to sort different types of waste into different waste bins!

Solar Decathlon Design Challenge 2023

IDS at UBC Okanagan has partnered with Thompson Rivers University (TRU) to compete in the 2023 Solar Decathlon Design Challenge. We are one of 124 teams, from 97 collegiate institutions, competing in this prestigious international design competition.
Over the next five months, the IDS team will design a four-unit multi-generational residential building (with one accessible unit) using materials sourced within 800 km of the project site. This resilient home will be engineered to withstand the extreme climate of Lytton, BC while meeting BC Step 5 and DOE Net Zero Ready requirements. Students will implement passive design strategies and life cycle assessment to create a LEED Platinum-ready design.

Our team aspires to promote sustainable, resilient, and socially equitable housing in British Columbia while building a lasting IDS Solar Decathlon team that participates in the competition yearly and is committed to developing students’ leadership in multi-disciplinary subjects of the built environment.

We are grateful for the support of our faculty advisors at TRU and the UBC School of Engineering, and our industry partners; Project Green Architecture, Smith +Andersen, and RJC Engineers.

Interested in sustainability? Want to make a positive change on our campus?

Join the first Innovate, Design, Sustain (IDS) meeting on Tuesday Jan. 26, 6:00 to 7:00 PM (PST). At our first meeting, you will be able to get more information for our proposed projects, and you can even share your own sustainability-related project ideas with us!

Welcome to the Innovate, Design, Sustain (IDS) Club at UBCO! We are a new (and the first!) sustainability-focused design club at UBC's Okanagan campus. We started this club to provide a platform for all students who want to make a change in our environment for the better. We believe that if we all come together, we can achieve a great impact in our environment by using science, engineering, and creativity.

We are currently proposing projects that address different areas of sustainability—which include installing solar powered benches around the campus to charge phones, making and promoting reusable wrapping, managing food waste on campus, and more! We will introduce all these project plans in our first general meeting with all student members, and will together choose which ones to proceed with this semester.

We will be starting our general meetings within the next few weeks, and will announce the exact date very soon. Go to the link below if you want to be added to our mailing list and join our meetings. We look forward to seeing you in our first meeting!
