Here's a look inside a Heat Recovery Ventilator (HRV).

How do they work? HRV's precondition new fresh air while exhausting old stale air. In addition to exhausting the air in your bathroom like an exhaust fan, an HRV mixes the old stale air with new fresh air transferring heat in the winter or removing heat in the summer.

How often should I do maintenance? As per Kelowna's Building Codes, HRVs must run 24/7; therefore, regular maintenance is essential to ensure that they are running effectively. It is recommended to vacuum the filters every 6 months (they should be changed every one to three years) and to clean the core every year.

Dirty vs Clean air filter.

Your HVAC system does more than just maintain your home's temperature; it recycles and recirculates old, stale air, allowing you to breathe fresh air. An air filter plays a very important role in your system, it captures everything you didn't want to breathe (dried hair, dust, lint, pet hair, bacteria, etc.).

Changing your air filters regularly is a simple and easy way to keep yourself safe and your equipment working properly. You can run into many problems if your air filter remains dirty for an extended period of time due to restricted air flow to your furnace.

Changing your air filter every three months is a good rule of thumb. However, there are always exceptions to the rule, such as square footage, pets, filter size, and outside pollution.

There's no denying that construction is messy. Whether it's wood, sawdust, nails, you name it, we don't want it in our HVAC system. Prior to connecting our heat runs to the boot, we cover all floor registers with a sheet of metal to prevent this. It's so simple, but it can save your HVAC system from being clogged with construction materials before you even move in.

Details... Details... Details... at first glance this might look like a normal heat run; however, for this to reach the upstairs bedroom it has to partially run in an 'exposed' area. In this case, spray foam will be used to insulate the area around the heat run. To avoid spray foam getting inside our heat run and expanding, we must duct seal all joints and connections that will be spray foamed. In such a situation, the airflow needed to keep the room comfortable would be greatly restricted.

Our team at Ductworks Heating & Air Conditioning LTD. takes pride in what we do and pays attention to every detail.

Is your coil frozen? How do you tell if your coil is frozen? If your air conditioner suddenly stopped cooling your house this may be the issue. The best way to check is to look at your vents. Are they warm / room temperature? Is there little to no air flow when the air conditioner is running? If yes, it's more than likely your coil is frozen.

What caused your coil to freeze? More than likely the cause is a dirty air filter. The coils job is to absorb heat as warm air blows through it. When your air filter is dirty it restricts air flow, causing your coil to freeze.

How do you fix this? Luckily, it's quite simple. Picture your coil as a big chunk of ice. The only way to fix it is to let the ice melt. To do this turn your system off either from your thermostat or your furnace switch. Leave your system off for 8 hours (this can vary depending on the size of your coil). While your system is off don't forget to change your air filter; otherwise, it will freeze up again. If this doesn't fix your issue give us a call today at (250) 765-8854!

Tip: Turn your system off before bed and let your coil thaw overnight! This way your system should be ready by the time you wake up and ready to go for the hottest part of the day.

Note: The majority of the water should drain down your condensate drain; however, the amount of water melting may cause it to overflow. This shouldn't cause any damage but don't be alarmed if you see a pool of water around your furnace.

Did you change/check your furnace filter lately? Make sure it is clean so that your airflow is not restricted, which in turn can effect how your AC runs.
