The Battle of the Atlantic (1939–1945) was the longest campaign of the Second World War
and essential to Allied victory. It focused on protecting supply routes across the Atlantic,
ensuring that Britain received the food, equipment, and reinforcements needed to
continue the fight against N**i Germany. Canadian naval, air, and merchant forces played
a major role in escorting convoys and defending these lifelines.

Facing constant threats from German U-boats, Allied forces developed convoy systems
and improved anti-submarine tactics and technology over time. By 1943, these efforts had
significantly reduced losses and helped secure control of the Atlantic, paving the way for
major operations such as the D-Day landings.

The campaign came at a high cost, with thousands of Canadians losing their lives. Each
year, Battle of the Atlantic Sunday—observed on the first Sunday in May—honours their
service and sacrifice, recognizing the critical contribution Canada made to the Allied
victory.

We recognize First Responders Day in Ontario, which is observed each May 1 under the First Responders Day Act, 2013. This day honours the courage and dedication of police, firefighters, paramedics, dispatchers, medical professionals, and military personnel who serve on the front lines of emergencies. It recognizes their vital role in protecting life, property, and the environment, often at great personal risk, while also remembering those who have fallen in the line of duty. The day is an opportunity for communities to express gratitude and to support the ongoing mental health and well-being of these professionals and their families.
