We’re proud to sponsor this event at Haisla Nation to support a youth entrepreneurship camp that creates opportunities for young people to learn, grow, and bring their ideas to life.

Through the program, participants develop and pitch business concepts while building skills in financial planning, marketing, operations, and community impact. Giving back is a key focus, reflecting values we champion through our Investing for Impact approach.

We attended sessions throughout the camp and were inspired by the creativity and dedication shown by all participants, from early ideas to final business pitches.

Programs like this help empower the next generation through hands-on, culturally relevant learning experiences within the communities where we operate. We were especially encouraged by the number of motivated and innovative individuals we met, many of whom we would be excited to see as future participants in the Haisla internship program.

A Casting Legacy: Honouring Rob Ciemniak’s 36 Year Career

After 36 years at our BC Works operation in Kitimat, Rob Ciemniak has entered retirement, leaving behind a legacy defined by technical excellence, continuous improvement, and a deep commitment to developing people.

Rob began his career on the Casting line in the early 1990s, working his way through every role in the operation. Over nearly three decades in Casting, he became known not just for his knowledge of the process, but for his drive to make things better - safer, more reliable, and fit for the future.

That mindset played a key role in the development of C Casting at BC Works. Selected as part of the original pilot team, Rob travelled overseas to learn from other operations and brought those insights back to Kitimat, helping shape a step change in technology that introduced robotics, electronics and more modern systems into the Casthouse.

For the past 13 years, Rob has served as the Casting Department Trainer, responsible for training across the full Casting operation - from the cold end to the hot end. In this role, he helped generations of employees, many with no prior industrial experience, build the skills and confidence needed to work safely and independently. Just as important, he modelled a mindset of curiosity and lifelong learning, reminding others that improvement never stops.

Born and raised in Kitimat, Rob’s connection to BC Works runs deep. His father, Walter, also worked in Casting for 34 years, and today that legacy may continue into a third generation. As he steps into retirement, Rob plans to remain in the community he proudly calls home.

Rob is being honoured not only for what he built and improved, but for the people he shaped along the way. His influence lives on in the systems, processes and individuals who will carry that work forward.

Celebrating Our Retirees at Rio Tinto BC Works
This week we had the pleasure of hosting two luncheons for our retirees. At both gatherings, you could feel the energy, hear the laughter, and see meaningful connections being remade. It was truly wonderful to experience so many excited faces, some familiar returning guests and others newly retired, joining a wider community shaped by former mentors, teachers, and trailblazers who built the foundation they also helped to build.

Guests were treated to an engaging update from Simon Pascoe, General Manager BC Works, who shared highlights from the past year and spoke to the significant strides Rio Tinto has continued to make. Simon also took the time to sincerely thank each retiree for their dedication and hard work, acknowledging the vital role they played in building the smelter into what it is today.

Following the presentation, the room came alive as retirees shared stories with one another and caught up on life beyond the workplace. The excitement and warmth were unmistakable as conversations flowed and memories were revisited. It was a joyful reminder of the strong community and lasting legacy created by those who helped shape Rio Tinto BC Works.

🚦 Rail Crossing Safety Reminder 🚦

We’d like to share a friendly reminder about safety at the public rail crossing.

Recently, operational activities caused the crossing lights to activate more frequently and for longer periods than usual. While those issues have now been resolved, this is an important opportunity to remind everyone why rail crossing rules matter.

🚫 When the lights are flashing, please do not cross the tracks.

Flashing signals are there to protect drivers, pedestrians, and rail crews who may be working in the area - even when a train isn’t immediately visible. Obeying these signals is required under the Grade Crossing Regulations (SOR/2014 275) & BC Motor Vehicle Act (clause 185) and is critical to preventing serious incidents.

We understand that waiting can be frustrating at times, but a short delay is far safer than the risk of crossing when it’s not safe to do so.
