Every material choice on a build comes down to trade-offs. Here is where I stand.

Metal roofing is more affordable. Copper lasts a lifetime, but it costs far more.

Standing seam metal outlasts asphalt shingles, but the right choice depends on the style of the home.

Fiber cement siding protects a home better than vinyl, every time.

Spray foam insulation delivers higher energy efficiency and better air tightness than fiberglass.

Steel beams handle larger spans without the bulk of an oversized wood beam.

For siding, I trust Engaged Building Products. Their aluminum siding comes with a built in rain screen, powder coated finish, and it holds up for decades.

Here's the thing nobody wants to talk about. The guys building at two fifty, three hundred a square foot? They're not doing this. They slap the windows in, move on, and pray nothing gets scratched, dented, or compromised before the client walks through the door.

And then you wonder why the window leaks two years later. Or why the finish on the frame looks beat up on move in day.
