Heating season is a good reminder to check smoke and carbon-monoxide alarms. Confirm their locations, test them using the manufacturer’s instructions and check replacement dates—not only the batteries. An alarm is the last line of warning, not a substitute for properly operating fuel-burning equipment, venting and combustion air.
