Late-season algae is the kind that costs you.

Early in the summer a bloom is mostly an eyesore. By mid-August you've had three months of heat and organic load stacking up, and what's in that water now is thick enough to restrict flow, foul equipment, and put out an odour you can smell from the yard.

Here's the part people get wrong: leaving it to freeze doesn't solve it. All that organic matter is still in there come spring, and you start next season from a worse position than you started this one.

Treating now costs less than shocking a lagoon in June.

Meet Nick, who runs manufacturing.

Nick's newer to Canada and newer to the team, and he came in with a way of thinking about the work that's stuck with the rest of us: he treats the shop the way he treats his household. Patience. Consistency. Actually caring how it turns out.

That sounds soft until you watch what it means on a production floor. It means batches get checked instead of assumed. It means when something's off, it gets fixed then, not shipped and apologized for later.

When he's not here he's out exploring the province with his wife and kids; hiking, biking, generally getting more use out of an Alberta summer than most of us who grew up here.

Glad he's on this side of the counter.

Schools go back in about three weeks.

Which means right now, somewhere in every division, a facilities lead is walking empty hallways with a clipboard trying to figure out what they're short on before 600 kids walk through the door.

Anyone can pour algaecide off the bank. The problem is that the bank isn't where your algae is.

A dugout or lagoon holds most of its volume out in the middle, well past where a jug and good intentions will reach. Treat the edges and you get a clean-looking shoreline and a bloom that walks right back in within a couple of weeks.

So we bring the tank, the pump, and a boom that puts product where it actually needs to go — dosed to the volume of your water, not to whatever's left in the container.

That's the difference between treating a pond and treating the edge of a pond.

The call always comes on a Friday night.

Kitchen drain backs up mid-service. Nobody's coming out until Monday. You're mopping a floor you should be plating on, and the health inspector's visit is a coin flip away.

Here's the thing about grease and organic buildup: it doesn't happen suddenly. It happens slowly, every single service, until the day the line finally gives. Which means it's one of the few problems in a commercial kitchen you can actually get ahead of.

Enzyme treatment works differently than a caustic drain opener. Instead of burning through a blockage once, it digests organic waste continuously — so buildup never gets the chance to become a blockage. Set it up on a dosing schedule and it runs on its own.

Cheaper than an emergency call. A lot cheaper than a closed kitchen.

Meet Chris.

He's been the shop manager here for 24 years. That means if you've bought from TwinPro at any point since 2002, you've probably talked to him.

Twenty-four years in one shop does something you can't shortcut. Chris can tell you why a degreaser that works fine in one bay is the wrong call in another. He knows which products people order out of habit when there's a better fit sitting on the next shelf. He knows what a job actually needs, because he's watched thousands of them.

That's the part people mean when they say they trust a supplier. Not the price list, the person who picks up the phone.

When he's not here, he's usually camping, hiking, or chillaxing, refusing to do anything at all in his backyard. Fair enough.

Algae doesn't stay a cosmetic problem for long.

It clogs intake lines. It fouls the water your livestock drink. It creates odour that carries a long way on a hot day. And by the time a bloom is thick enough that you're annoyed looking at it, you're already treating a bigger problem than you would have been three weeks ago.

We treat ponds, lagoons, dugouts and reservoirs across Southern Alberta — and we don't just drop off a jug and wish you luck. We calculate the dose against your actual surface area and depth, and we apply it properly so the middle of the water gets treated, not just the edges.
