This culvert was exhibiting severe deformations of up to 13% in places. It also had bank erosion problems with large voids forming above the downstream culvert end. Since it was long, and under a significant amount of fill (8 m), an open cut culvert replacement was a fairly expensive proposition for a road with 35 vehicles of traffic per day.
Normally, a culvert liner would be one of the best options in a scenario like this. But during our preliminary engineering we exhibited out-of-the-box thinking and recommended a highly innovative solution that involved vertical struts together with a concrete floor and fish baffles. This custom design saved the County about $300,000 versus a standard culvert liner, and about $1 million dollars versus a replacement.
