Behind every model, there is a team.

Behind this project, there were hours of coordination, checking, modelling, detailing and engineering decisions.

Every connection, every support, every duct section and every drawing had to make sense not only in the model, but also in fabrication, transport and er****on.

This is why we are proud that our project is part of the Tekla BIM Awards.

For us, this is not only about showing a 3D model.
It is about showing the work behind it: the engineering logic, the attention to detail and the people who made it possible.

Calciner retrofit – underestimated challenges

In calciner retrofit projects, most of the discussion focuses on technology.
Process parameters. Capacity. Emissions.

And the structure?

Too often treated as “an adaptation of the existing system.”

That’s a mistake.

Because a calciner retrofit is not an update.
It changes how the entire structure behaves.



1. Temperature effects

A new calciner = new temperature distribution.

local overheating of the structure

temperature differentials between elements

thermal expansions not considered in the original design

The result?
Secondary stresses that seem to “come out of nowhere.”

2. Dynamics

A calciner is not just mass. It’s movement.

vibrations from operation

time-dependent loads

If you treat it as a static problem - you’ve already lost.


3. Change in load paths

Adding or modifying elements changes how the structure works.

Loads no longer follow the original paths.

The most underestimated aspect.

The structure during installation ≠ the structure in its final state.

Why is a retrofit in a cement plant not just another steel structure?
At first glance, it may look like a typical structural project.
In reality, retrofit projects are among the most complex engineering challenges.
Engineers must work within extremely limited space, between existing installations, often relying on foundations with decades of operational history.
And there is one more crucial factor:
the plant is still operating.
The rotary kiln is running.
Material handling systems are active.
Production cannot simply stop.
That is why the biggest challenge in retrofit projects is not the steel itself.
The real challenge is integrating a new structure into an existing industrial system.
