Backyard Homes Canada We specialize in building Additional Residential Units in Canada 🇨🇦

🏡 Thinking about buying a prefab home off Amazon and dropping it in your backyard? Not so fast.

In Ontario, your backyard home needs to meet the Ontario Building Code — and factory-built homes generally require the appropriate CSA A277 certification.

And here’s what many prefab ads leave out 👇

✅ Foundation and site servicing
✅ Grading and utility connections
✅ Oversized transportation costs
✅ Crane fees to set the unit

Prefab can be a great option when done right, but it isn’t automatically the cheaper route.

At Backyard Homes Canada, we build on-site, designing each backyard home around your property, your needs, and your budget.

No trucking premiums. No crane day. Just a home built for your backyard. 🔨

Going into the long weekend as a business owner thinking I’m finally going to relax… 😂🍂

The emails, clients, permits, marketing and material orders have other plans.

🏡 Not every property is a good backyard home candidate.

Before we ever talk about building, we walk the property and look at the things that can make or break a project:

✅ Access for construction
✅ Water, sanitary & electrical servicing
✅ Available build footprint
✅ Setbacks & zoning
✅ Parking requirements
✅ Existing structures
✅ Grading & drainage
✅ How the backyard home will actually fit on the property

There’s a lot more to building a backyard home than simply having a big backyard.

We’re showing you what we look for before we buy, design or build.

Follow along as we find properties and turn them into successful multi-unit housing projects. 🏠

🚨 London just changed the rules for short-term rentals.

If you own an ADU, backyard home, or another dwelling in London and you’re thinking about using it as an Airbnb or short-term rental, there are some important rules you need to know.

As of October 1, 2026:
🏠 You’re limited to ONE short-term accommodation
📋 You need a Short-term Accommodation Provider Licence
🔥 Property Standards + Fire Safety inspections are required
📢 Your licence number must appear on your listings
💰 The annual licence renewal is $201, plus the one-time $351 inspection fee
📅 Short-term accommodation means stays of 28 days or less

And there’s an important distinction between a legal ADU and being allowed to operate that ADU as a short-term rental.

So if you’re thinking about building a backyard home in London specifically for Airbnb or short-term rental income, make sure you understand the rules BEFORE you build.

Follow us for more updates on ADUs, zoning, grants and housing rules across Southwestern Ontario.

🏡 Behind the build: our Maple Model!

We’re building our Maple Model — a 2-bedroom, 1-bath, 600 sq. ft. backyard home — and today we’re taking you behind the scenes to show you something you might not think much about: rebar.

So, what is rebar? It’s reinforcing steel that gets installed within the concrete foundation.

🔩 Why do we use it?
Concrete is extremely strong in compression, but it’s much weaker when it comes to tension. Rebar helps reinforce the concrete and allows the foundation to better handle stresses, loads and movement.

📍 How is it installed?
The rebar is placed according to the engineered foundation design, positioned at the required spacing and supported so it stays in the correct location when the concrete is poured.

🏗️ What does it actually do?
Once the concrete cures, the steel and concrete work together as one reinforced system — helping provide the strength and durability our backyard homes need from the foundation up.

This is just one of the many important steps that goes into building a quality backyard home.

Follow along as we build our 600 sq. ft. Maple Model from foundation to finished home!

It’s what’s underneath that matters. 🏠

When we build a backyard home, we don’t just pour a slab and call it a day.

We install insulation and a 6-mil poly vapour barrier beneath the concrete to help reduce heat loss, improve energy efficiency, and protect the building from ground moisture.

And it’s not just a guess — our foundation and insulation design is based on the required building-code calculations for the project.

A properly designed foundation means a more efficient, comfortable backyard home for years to come.

The details you don’t see are just as important as the ones you do.

🏡 What if your backyard could help pay down your mortgage?

This homeowner plans to rent out their new backyard home for approximately $2,100/month.

That rental income can help:
➡️ Pay down the backyard home
➡️ Help cover costs associated with their principal residence
➡️ Build equity as the mortgage is paid down

You’re not just adding a home to your property — you’re creating another income-producing asset.

That’s the opportunity with a backyard home.

🚧 Not every project goes exactly as planned.

While installing the sanitary servicing for this backyard home, we discovered that the existing sanitary private drain connection was blocked by tree roots.

We immediately looped in the homeowner, showed them the CCTV footage, and explained exactly what we had found. From there, we worked quickly to get the issue resolved so we could keep the project moving forward.

This is why communication and transparency are so important when building a backyard home. Problems can happen — it’s how you handle them that matters. 💪

Follow along as we document the real costs, challenges, and progress of this backyard home project.
