Patricia Beaston, MD, PhD, has joined Seraxis as Chief Medical Officer.

Upon completion of our proposed merger with Seraxis, she will become Chief Medical Officer of the combined company, BetaNova Biotherapeutics.

Dr. Beaston has 24 years of FDA leadership experience. She served across three of the FDA’s principal centers: Center for Drug Evaluation and Research (CDER), where she evaluated endocrine therapeutics; Center for Devices and Radiological Health (CDRH); and most recently Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research (CBER), where her review responsibilities included islet cell transplantation, immune modulation in type 1 diabetes (T1D), and cell and gene therapies.

Her expertise will strengthen clinical and regulatory leadership for BetaNova as SR-02, investigational pancreatic stem cell-derived insulin-producing islets, are advanced into a Phase 1/2 clinical trial. The first patient dosing for the trial is targeted for Q1 2027.

Together, Sernova and Seraxis will aim to bring together complementary science, technology, and expertise to advance new treatment options for people living with T1D.

In connection with the recently proposed merger of Sernova and Seraxis, a financing round of $11.2 million has been closed.

The funds will be used to support cGMP manufacturing of SR-02, Seraxis’ lead stem cell-derived pancreatic islet cell program, and first patient dosing of SR-02 in the Phase 1/2 trial in Q1 2027 under an FDA-cleared IND with initial clinical data anticipated in H1 2027.
