the roof usually isn’t the real issue.

Most water intrusion starts at transitions — where two materials meet.

Here’s what we see most often:

Missing kickout flashing
Without it, water running down the roof gets pushed directly behind siding instead of into the gutter.

Improper step flashing
Step flashing should direct water down and out — not allow it to sit or migrate sideways.

Poorly bent custom pieces
If metal isn’t bent precisely to match pitch and angle, you create micro gaps.
Water only needs a small opening.

Leaks are rarely dramatic at first.
They’re slow. Hidden. Expensive later.

The difference is in the details — and in the bends.

Water intrusion rarely happens because siding or roofing “failed.”

It happens because water found a seam, a joint, or a transition that wasn’t properly protected.

Here’s why these areas matter:

Chimneys
Masonry expands and contracts differently than roofing materials. Without proper step and counter flashing, water gets behind the system.

Windows & Doors
Improper head flashing or missing drip caps allow water to sit and migrate into framing.

Roof-to-Wall Transitions
These are high-volume water areas. If step flashing or kickout flashing is missing, water runs directly behind siding.

Deck Ledgers
One of the most common structural rot points. Water gets trapped between the ledger and rim joist when flashing is skipped or poorly installed.

Parapet Walls
Flat surfaces + poor cap flashing = pooling water and long-term infiltration.

Most flashing problems aren’t dramatic at first.
They’re slow, quiet, and expensive later.
